  • wheel removal

Getting ready to pull the wheel from my bike to do a tire change and try my hand at balancing. Any tips on removing the front a rear wheel from my 79 sf. It has standard forks so I am not sure if that changes anything up or not.

Any tips ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

Remove the bolts that hold the front fender from one of the forks so that you can spread them a little to get the tire through.

On the rear-- make sure the rear is up high enough so the tire will roll out from under the rear of the fender. It won't come out the side.

Just pop one of the front calipers off and it will come off just fine. I've done that a couple of times now.

        Hey GK,

If you don't have one, find Catatonic Bug, his profile, and then the links he provides for manuals for download!!

There are some special steps for the Standard for both loosening and then retightening the front axle clamps.

There's a spacer on the rear rim before the brake bracket, take photos first.
While you've got the rear off, clean and apply fresh grease to the wheel/rim hub splines, and might as well remove the FINAL DRIVE unit from the swing arm and regrease the driveshaft splines and final drive splines at the same time, since that zerk fitting on the final drive doesn't do anything!!
        T.C.

PS, there's a tech tip or two showing how to remove, replace the tire and reattach it on a SPECIAL front end., also look for the rear bearing replacement tip for photos and such on the rear wheel!

Thanks TC. You are always so thorough in your explanations.

I never thought to explain about the spacers and such. Being of mechanical backround I tend to just assume people will take care to remember how things come apart so they'll know how to reassemble.

BTW The unbolting of the fender to get more flex in the forks is for us people who don't have a compressor and need to install the tire inflated.

          The pictoral is great!

For removing rear, it's not necessary to raise any higher than center stand as rear fender is hinged. Just remove two side nuts and bolt holding fender in place and lift fender up.

                  ????

                  Neanderthal style back wheel removal:

Drop wheel to ground. Get a good hold on each side of fender or grab rail.. pick up back of bike and kick wheel out with foot.

Use a jack with a piece of wood on it. Place your bike on centre tsand. Jack up the front as high as possible. Dont go higher than your centre stand. do your thing with the front wheel. Then move the kac to the rear and jack up again high as you can, keeping an eye on your centre stand. Do you thing with the rear wheel, remove the jack and piece of wood, take off centre stand and all done.

I have found a gearbox jack works nice. You push it in under the bike while on side stand. Get someone to balance it for you, take it of side stand, and jack the whole bike up on it's frame.
