You can also use brake cleaner to clean up the oil on the pan.

      Lamric,

      The templates are great. Thanks.

I should be able to figure out how to lock the size to 100% soon. It is kind of stuck at 69% now. The only computer that is connected to a printer in the house isnt friendly to me.

Dont be suprised when you see metal filings in the pan either. They will be there no matter what. Every bike I have had apart has had those. Let us know if anything is larger than filings though. Could be potential problems.

          maybe, shifter?

Of course, the bike is still not in a running state. Howeve, when I looked more closely the underside, the left side was definately wetter. The right half is almost dry.

it may be a shifter as Athedra said. if that is the case, does it go the route of second shifter problem? Or, is it just a matter of changing the gasket around the shifter?

You might as well do the shifter cover at the same time, just to be safe. It's easy, and that way you know it's been fixed.

If I was doing the job, I would take the time to remove all 3 covers (clutch, oil pan, and shifter) and replace all gaskets with RTV (I use Ultra Black). I hate paper gaskets, and the RTV is so much easier to get off if you ever have to get back in there for something (like the 2nd gear fix). The gasket sealer you have to use on a paper gasket turns to concrete, and does not let go of the metal very easily. RTV comes off with just a small wire brush and a spray of brake parts cleaner.

If you use RTV per the directions (clean 1/8" bead around all holes, finger tighten for an hour, then torque it down), there should be almost zero extra to fall off into the inside of the engine. Just don't apply it with your finger or any kind of spreader. It should be a nice clean bead, applied with the applicator tip that comes with the tube. Also, be sure to get ALL oil (including fingerprints) off the mating surfaces before application.

One other nice thing about using RTV, is that you don't have to loctite the bolts that hold the covers on. The RTV seeps into the threads and works perfectly as a thread locker.

                  Catatonic,

Thank you for explaining how you would use RTV for my leak situation. I think I will try RTV on shifter and the oil pan.
