  • Cost for shipping a bike

Has anyone every shipped a bike or had one shipped to them? I'm trying to figure out what the cost for something like that would be (roughly). I know it wouldn't be terribly accurate but trying to figure out a cost from East Coast to West Coast (cross country ship).

Here's one of many on-line companies with a

    shipping rate calculator:

For example, they quote $824 to ship an '80 Standard from Ney York to California.

I just ran across that link, Gzz, i thought it would be cheaper then that but I guess it would be the same as a car. Same amount of work I assume.

Actually, when I got a quote a couple years ago they were including "Crating". The have to secure it for the trip. May be what made the quote surprise you.

I've used Forward Air before, but it was several years ago.
I did the crating myself, but getting the crates to the terminal was a challenge.

A winch and a tilt trailer worked for me.

Don"t ask me how I know but don't go for the low ball price. It cost me $650 from Wisconson to North Texas.

              Let's see.. if it's running..

3000 miles. Divided by 35 mpg (Gotta play a little) = @ 86 gallons of gas.

Gas is cheaper here, but figure 2.75 a gallon = $236.50.

              Plane ticket home= $300.

Total cost minus meals or hotels, $536.50.

Riding west coast to east coast on a 30 year old bike..... PRICELESS!

You forgot to mention the experience you would gain with all that "on the road repair" riding a "new to you" bike across country. On the flip side, if you bring a laptop you have access to members for assistance in lots of cities from coast to coast.

Didn't forget to mention it.. I just didn't figure there were many bikes here.. especially these bikes that are known to keep going even when something's wrong.. that one of them wouldn't go a mere 3k miles without breaking down?

Also.. he lives in Cali.. and mentioned shipping FROM the west coast to the east. So the bike isn't new to him apparently. I may be wrong, but I took it as he was wanting to ship a bike TO someone, not from someone to him?? I don't know if you've noticed though.. I could definately be wrong.. lol.

BUT.. .I might wait for a better time of year to try to cross the Rockies.. lol.

I didn't realize he was talking about shipping from him to the east side.

Try uship.com I sent a truckload of xs parts from Pa to Mn for $192. It's like the ebay of shipping. you place an ad and people bid on the job. It worked great for me.

Hi,this is maybe not the most usefull info for you ,but I pay $500 for shipping a bike from 51742,IA to OSLO Norway. Not expensive I will say,but expensive if I buy a bike in for example New York and will need to ship a long way in USA first
