  • Thanks - And a parts source question

First, I want to thank all those who helped with my earlier carb and clutch problems. You guys made some great suggestions.

On the carb, I'm pretty sure the #2 float stuck, filled #2, and overflowed through the vacuum tube. I'll pull them off again and make sure the needles are OK and set the floats again.

On the clutch, I think I lost the ball bearings inside. Bike has 30K miles and the clutch was a little hinky before I started messing with it so I think I'd like to get a fresh start with a new clutch pack and springs. Need recommendations.

Based on the searches I have done I think I want to add the extra steel plate but not use the HD springs (66 year old hand strength isn't what it once was). I generally think in terms of EBC or Barnett but would appreciate your recommendations on those, other alternatives, and sources. Will also want to replace the adjusting screw and it's nut as well as o rings, gaskets, etc.

Does anyone know if JustJeff is still in the parts business?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hey Doug,

Some folks have posted with problems with Barnett frictions being too sticky, trouble getting them to release completely, etc.....YMMV!?

EBC is a good brand, but surprisingly the VESRAH ones that PNM sells are decent as well, and priced right...at only $5.00 per disc! You can get a set of the springs from them as well. Don't let the HD spring description scare you, they aren't that much stiffer than OEM. With the Extra Steel, the OEM springs are just compressed a little more in the pack, but they really don't cause hardly any extra strength requirement to pull the lever. AND, if you take your cable out, and really lube it up nicely while you're doing this, then it'll move slicker than snot, and you'll think you're pulling a hydraulic clutch!

Or...you could do that mod as well!?

The extra steels are available new from BIkeBandit for about $8.00, PNM doesn't carry them! However, if you need other parts like a clutch basket and such, contact ANDREAS WEISS...he's the parts guy with great parts and great(better than ebay) prices, and knows these bikes very well, so you know you'll be getting quality parts and the right ones!!!

I don't know if my results are typical, but I used the Vesrah springs on my clutch. I do have the extra steel plate in the basket. I put the new springs in just last May. I'm not the poster boy for clutch longevity anyway, but within @ 3 months, my clutch started slipping again.

I just fixed the clutch back up. I did have 3 fiber discs that were a little thinner than the others that I replaced, but all were still in spec. The springs, on the other hand, were WAAAYYY smashed below min spec. I never had this problem from other brands.

This time, I asked around the bike stores to get their opinion on the stoutest clutch springs and most said Barnett. I just installed them a couple nights ago. The spring wire gauge seems to be a bit thicker and it takes considerable more force to pull the clutch than before.. but I'm comparing that to wore out springs.

The Barnett springs were @ $5 more than the Vesrah... I'll let you know in a few months if I think they're worth the extra $$.

I use the PartsNmore frictions and the EBC-CSK springs from Dennis Kirk (P/N 38-2009) and no extra steel plate. Never, ever had any slipping (using non-synthetic motor oil) and not too stiff at the clutch lever. Depending on you're location, PNM has slow delivery time.
