  • What is it??

    Hello there,
I need some information on what I believe is a 1980 XS 1100.
I was at the wrecking yard to pick up my current bike, '01 Royal * Venture and my wife saw an older Yamaha motorcycle in the vines. The paperwork at the yard says it is a 1980 Yamaha.
It has a inline 4 cylinder motor, 4 into 2 exhaust, the tank is narrowed down like a 1100-G, but has the big round headlight like an 1100-SG. It has a rear drum brake, which really has me cornfused!!
Unfortunately there is NO instrument cluster or seat on it. Apparently the guy who had it was higher than a kite, barefoot, t-shirt and shorts, no helmet and riding around town with no seat. Go figure that one out, huh?

I does have the grab rail like I have seen in a few pics of a 1980 1100-SG.
The serial number on the motor is 4H7-002284. I couldn't find that on the list on the xs 1100 web site. Any ideas on where to find more info??

I was told the bike ran last October when it was impounded, but has a broken spark plug on the outside right cylinder and no battery.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am considering offering the guy at the wrecking yard a few hundred bucks and make it a project.

    Thakns and ride SAFE!!

    700 maxium

Sounds like ur looking at a 700 maxium not an 1100 but even if it is a maxium it would be worth only about 1 to 2 hundred dollars in that condition in my humble opinion good luck Doug M

      Thanks for your quick reply!!
You got me going in the right direction and it turns out the bike is a 1980 XJ650G. Who'd a thunk that Mamayama made a 650cc 4 banger??

Thanks again. This site is a lot like the venturers forum. I go by Flesh there, so lurk around someday if you like. Lots of good people and tons of info!!

Yup, SWMBO's second bike was an '81 XJ650 Midnight Special.

It got her all the way to Wyoming and back just fine...

The one I am looking at is like yours, but the tank is different. It's like it is concaved in at the seat end to tuck your knees in, sort of like some Seca tanks, and no seat, but the rest is just like yours.

          Thanks!!
