  • Replacement headlight bulbs....

Has anyone used one of these bulbs?

    Its rated at 90/100 watt

Just curious if there are any issues with the plastic headlight bucket. I know the light itself has a metal/glass bulb, but is the bucket in danger here....
also, if you have used it, any issues with fuses???

Im planning on replacing the "instrument" bulbs with LEDS like T.C.'s Tach fix. and the the taillight is LED....my turns are still standard filament, but they arent on all the time...just to turn

I am using one like it, but I have it in a glass headlight. I also don't think mine is quite that high on the wattage. How much are those and where are you finding it?

I always hated those cars coming towards me with the blue-at-first-then-blinding-white headlights, but then turned around and put one on the bike. It is a MUCH whiter light and takes a bit of getting used to, but it sure beats the yellow bug light Montreux Blue uses!

As far as the wattage goes, I know the XS is a bit weaker charging than the XJ and that may put it right up there at the max.

So.. lot's to say, but not much help really.. lol. Sorry.

      J&P Cycles....15 bucks.

Thats what i was afraid of. not sure if the XS could handle that high of wattage. Some of the electrical Guru's here may be able to help with that.
Im sure its in the other posts here, but what is the big difference between the systems on the XS/XJ that the 'J' is stronger?

That's nearly double the wattage of the original bulb. At 12volts that's 8 AMPS! Nevermind the fuse I'd worry about the wiring being suitable to carry 8 Amps continuosly. Then there's the RLU, too. It may not be able to handle double the draw.

The XS is a brushless system and the XJ uses brushes against the rotor. There's a few more electronics on the XJ, so I guess that made them up the watt/amp rating just a bit. It also could have just been a fix since the original XS system has always been known to be a bit on the weak side.. though the XJs isn't a powerhouse either really.

Maybe i will get a bunch of those little powered generators that presses against the wheel and hook it up to the light. I figure if i get a dozen or so of them mounted between the front and rear wheels, i should be able to use that bulb with NO problem. that would look WAY cool NOT!!!

There's been reports (on other forums I frequent) of these melting the plastic plug for the lamp, so beware. It seems that good electrical connections are definitely needed if running these high-wattage bulbs....

I've ran a 55/100 bulb for the last 16 years, first in a stock Pasfico fairing and now in a Vetter, and I haven't experienced any problems with over heating or melting. However the guy who told me about the bulb conversion warned me that he had to replace the plug on his gl1100 several times because of melting, so I drilled vent holes on the sides of the light housing and ran a pvc duct out the back of the fairing to help keep things cool, and I only used the 55w low beam when riding in town and the high beam at highway speeds.

Man, I'm gonna have to get one of those and try it! I get quite a bit of air around my headlight. I'll keep an eye on it and replace it if the plug starts melting. The one I'm looking at.. for the specs on it.. at the bottom it says "Street legal.... No"

My kinda light! Sounds like a good bright one!

I guess if I start getting bright-lighted at night too often on low beam, I can try the 55/100. They make an 80/100 also, but the low beam probably isn't going to be much different, and when I want high beam.. I want to light up the countryside!
