  • Special chrome covers

I used to think all the Specials had chrome pick up coil/alt/valve covers but that doesn't seem to be. Does anyone know which Specials came w/ the chrome or when did they start to put chrome on them? Just curious.
79 F full cruiser, stainless brake lines, spade fuses, Accel coils, modded air box w/larger velocity stacks, 750 FD.
    79 SF parts bike.

Not sure any came stock with actual chrome on the engine side covers or the valve cover.

I think in 81 they painted the special engine cylinders black and then exposed the aluminum edges and also painted the valve cover black and exposed the ridges in bare aluminum. That is now mine is anyway.

My 81 special had the black cylinder block, but not the black cover. I thought the XJs had the black valve cover.

Mine was chromed and I talked to the OPO (original previous owner) who said he paid big bucks in 81 to have them chromed, so if he wasn't blowing smoke, mine werent chrome from the factoey either.

Don't you hate it when you spit while talking? Embarrassing isn't it?

Embarassing? Look at the group I hang with. If they don't embarass me, how could spitting when I type?

I am certainly no expert and have no idea what my bikes total history is. I do know that ever thing about it I have looked at so far has been bone from the factory stock.

LOL.. Probably including the tires, oil, and gas-like substance found gummed up in the carbs?

My 80 special has all of the engine covers chromed. As I bought it 25 years after it was made, I have no idea whether the chrome was factory or not. I always assumed it was done by a PO.

That would be the project bike Tod....and that would be just about the ONLY stock things on it when I got it!!! Heck, even the clutch lever is from a zuke I think.

OK grouchy... lol. I'm almost positive that none of these sidecovers came chromed from the factory.

I also don't know about the 81 valve covers, but yes, the XJ's was painted black with bare aluminum ribs.

Now, can we go back to gabbin'?

                            Factory

No chrome covers came from the factory.
First painted covers were on the LG.
