  • Emblem replacement or refinishing

Does anybody know a source for replacement emblems? There must be somewhere because my project bike came with one new side cover with a new emblem.

Or, is there anyone that can restore them? I need both tank, left side cover and the seat cowling for a standard.

Badges can be expensive, but they're pretty easy to refinish. Here's a thread that shows the easy way. Badge Refinishing

I redid mine pretty much you said except I used a Testors plastic model paint pen for the gold. It worked really well except I got in kind of a hurry and if you look real close you can see where I colored a little bit out of the lines.

            Try Gold Leaf

I recently redid my side cover badges with gold leaf and size adhesive I got at the hobby store and they came out great. This is not a very good picture and they look alot better up close.

I sanded the old gold off with 600 grit paper and cleaned everything up. I took the size and brushed a coating onto some heavy cardboard. Then I took the emblem and rolled it onto the size so that only the edges of the lettering picked up the size from the cardboard. I did not try and brush the size onto the lettering as that is very tedious and the size is thin like milky water. I let it dry for about an hour until the size turned clear and got the proper tack and then I applied the gold leaf and lightly dusted away the excess and burnished it in with a few cotton balls. Came out real smooth and shiney, approaching the factory gold plate.

I let it dry for a day and then coated the whole thing with a few coats of clear spray laquer. Whole thing cost about $12.00 including the clear laquer spray paint.

Once you un-can a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is with a bigger can.

I would definately do the refinishing, except for one thing...I have one brand new side cover emblem and I think it would always stand out.

What makes this a tough decision is that those replica emblems look real good...but dang they are proud of them Darn near 50 bucks each

Oh well...you guys did your part by giving me my options

Price was $5 more for 2 shipped from AU compared to Reproduction Decals in CA as they were out of the side cover emblems when I called and said they'd be out of them for 13weeks ????

Repaint the one for now and save your pennies.

                    Bet no one notices.

I think they make new ones at SPEED AND SPORT in Bloomsburg Pa. Everything there is spendy though. They are big in vintage Yamaha parts.

                        they won't notice

except maybe if judged in a show - most people will only see one side of the bike at a time and won't remember the difference - if it seems obvious to you then refinish BOTH sides the same.

Yep .. I agree. The 78/79 badges he has were replicated from a set I sent to him last year. He sent me a brand new set and they are realy nice!!

Well I have some tank emblems on the way. While I was brousing through MikesXS.com for a new rubber tank cap seal I noticed he had a set of tank emblems (two emblems) for 36 bucks Not a bad deal and that only leaves me with the side cover emblem to do something about. I think I can live with the seat cowling emblem for now

Check with auto detail supply shops, auto paint supply shops, auto detailers for someone in your town that might do the gold (fake) electroplating of car emblems.

I had looked into buying the equipment once, but it was pretty pricy.
