Did anybody find aftermarket carb boots that fit? The boots are really hard and cracked on my XS special. I am wondering if some of you have found direct fit with radiator or plumming parts...

Carb boots are double walled. Often the cracking is only on the outer wall and does not effect performance. You can recoat the outside with plasti-dip or something similar.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

I have not had to do it, but if it were me I would use brake parts cleaner or the like.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

If you use plasti dip, it takes about 10 coats, applied 30 minutes apart - it's kind of an all day thing. If you can't get all 10 on in the same day, then you need to let it fully cure before applying more. If you just wait over night, and start applying the next day it will react and bubble, leaving a grainy finish. Still looks pretty good though . For best results, rough them up good with some 220 grit sandpaper so the plasti will adhere well. Over here in South AFrica we have a thing called tool-grip. You get it in various colours, and needs a single coat to seal it.
I cleaned mine off with Fuel, let it dry and then gave it a coat. It applies easy, and you apply it with a normal paint brush. Over here it is R30 for half a liter, and is well worth the money spent.
Tip from a fool tho, dont paint the front and rear of the Carb rubbers. seems to make them harder to stretch when you put them back in.'79 XS1100 (2H9) named Bones

I plasti-dipped mine. They had some sort of dried up adhesive all over them (another PO mystery) that wouldn't peel or scrape off. I mixed up a strong batch of some off-brand oxyclean, soaked them over night, and all of the crud fell right off with a light scrubbing.
dbeardslee is right, it takes several coats to get them perfect. I was in a bit of a hurry and I only put 5 or 6 coats on mine. They look way better, but I wish I had taken the time to apply twice that many coats. I'll get them better this Winter.I know this, because Tyler knows this.
