First stripped everything and threw a bottle of pool acid in there. Stood there overnight, and took the acid out the next morning.
What do you mean by "threw a bottle of pool acid in there"? I assume you did NOT fill the tank with muriatic acid straight. How much was it diluted? Did you fill a bucket with the acid and submerge the tank?
Any way to clean the inside of the tank without messing up the paint? I really do need to derust the inside of my tank before it becomes a REAL problem. What I want to do is simply plug everything up and then fill the tank with the right "mixture". The goal is to keep the paint safe but get the rust out.
There is a product called Evapo-rust. I have not run across it in Canada yet, but guys from another forum are using it in the states. From what I hear it works really good and fairly quick on gas tank rust. Pour it in and slosh it around for a couple of days, pour it out. Some of the guys who have used it also stuck a handful of nuts in there to knock the bigger pieces off.

Hi Rasputin,
a handful of steel nuts works great and you can fish them out with a magnet afterwards but do NOT use a length of chain in a Standard tank.
The chain can irretrievably jam itself around the Standard tank's filler cap pocket drain tube.
Mr Impatience decided to cut open his Standard tank to get the chain out because Mr Stupid didn't realize it may as well have been left inside there.
That's why I have 3 standard tanks. The original that's rusted full of holes, the first replacement with huge smears of bondo hiding the ugly repair welds and the good one I'm actually using.
Next tank I de-rust I'll use electrolysis.

I did that with one of my tanks too, but I was told the sealer would not take the heat from powder coating. How did yours hold up? I have not yet painted or powder coated the tank. Cost me 140 canuck bucks to get it done, which is not cheap.

the first tank was coated by the rad shop the bmw tank was dipped (to clean) at the rad shop then i had it powder coated inside and out it has been 10 years and it still looks new i had the harley tank done (power coated) inside and out 13 years ago and it is also like new

I bought some Evapo-rust today. I have put some rusty stuff in it and it is soaking now. I took some pics before and I will try to get a pic every couple hrs if I can. For sure I can get pics after 24hrs. If this stuff works it would be great for gas tank de-rusting. Stay tuned for updates.

When I did it, I poured the entire quart size soda ash into a 15 gallon bucket. I remember that I later found out that it was thicker than somebody recommended online.
Anyway, I dont think there is harm to using solution that is too thick. I think the paint peel in my case happened more because the paint already being lifted from old age and submerging the entire tank in the solution.
No shop had sodium carbonate or A&H Washing Soda around where I live. The soda ash was the only form of sodium carbonate I could find.
Please note that I did not use coke/phosphoric acid to remove the rust but to coat the clean surface after the removal to keep the rust from coming back. After one month, it is still holding up.

The evapo-rust will coat the tank and resist rust after that as well. At least according to what the propaganda says. JAT
