I am thinking of picking up used Vetter side cases. The owner says they came off a 79 XS1100 Standard. Are there variations in mounting positions between one for standard and one for special? It would be best to take the bike with me to fit but it is in a shop for longer than I thought and is not possible.

I have a 79 standard. The clips at the top are closed slots that fits onto rubberized hangers and then clips in at the bottom.
Take a look at yours and see if it will be able to take it then work from there.'79 XS1100 (2H9) named Bones

your description seems to be about how the bike's plastic side covers are held on.
I think that dont is looking to attach hardshell luggage carriers.Fred Hill, S'toon

I beleive all the Vetter tourt-pak bags are the same. Just the mounts varied slightly, but we closr to universal.
You can go to the vetter website and check it out.

I do hope you are mis-spelling "carbs" here.
If not, while I deeply sympathize for your condition, you are in the wrong forum.Fred Hill, S'toon

HAhahaha, you obviously missed the first thread where I spoke about my newly purchased crabs and the old set I am man handling and trying to fit R1 injectors in them.
Someone pointed my typo out to me a tad to late. HAHAHAHAHahaha'79 XS1100 (2H9) named Bones

To answer the OP's question, the Vetter mounting hardware for the hard saddlebags is different for the Standards VS the Specials. Not by much, but they ARE different. There are also two different kinds of Vetter saddlebags (I just learned this a few weeks ago). Some have flat bottoms, and some (like mine) have a raised forward portion on the bottom, to clear some models' upward-pointing pipes. The proper version for the XS's is probably the flat-bottomed ones, but either style will work, and either style will fit the proper mounting bracket, once on the bike.1980 XS850SG - Sold

There are also the ones with the lock at the front, with no hinge, and the ones that flip sideways on a hinge.
I don't know what would be different in the mounts, between Speical and std. In fact, I am not sure they ever made bagger sets for the special, since the std was the tour model. This doesn't mean that people (dealers?) didn't put them on the special, however.
The frame is the same, so all the frame mounts are in the same spot, it's only the rear footpeg mount that MAY be slightly different, AFAIK.
OTOH, Maybe those bags, with the step in them, took advantage of the shorter special pipes? Are they shallower at the front, or deeper at the back than the normal bags?Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

It may be the rear footpeg mount that is the only difference between the Standard and Special brackets. All I know is that one will not fit on the other without some modification. The two different Vetter Saddlebag styles are the ONLY two styles that were ever made. As far as I can see, the "proper" set for any XS11 would be the flat-bottomed one, as we don't have the upward-pointing pipes that some other bikes had at the time.
This XJ belongs a member (Bob Embrey) here, and is now posted on the Vetter site. It has the raised bottom, but IMO, it looks quite nice that way.
This one is a CB750 with the raised bottoms, and this bike and others like it were the reason they were created. Notice how close the pipes are to the underside of the bag.
Here's a Goldwing that probably would have looked better with the flat-bottomed bags:
