  • removing a locked gas cap

Any ideas on removing a gas cap that won't unlock. I have been soaking it, and trying it for three days now with no success. I thought if there was a way of remocing the cap, i would replace it.

Is it a special or a standard?

Is it for your Midnight? The latch is external, so you can use a flat bar (screwdriver, spreader, scraper) to un-latch the lock and get it open.

Just checked BikeBandit, and the cap is still available, for only $60.00!

What are you soaking it with?? Have you tried PB Blaster?

Is it that you can put the key in but it won't turn or what??

That cap is the same as my transplanted XJ tank, and I have to PUSH DOWN on the cap a little before trying to turn the key to allow it to release so that the slides/pins can retract into the center of the cap to allow it to lift up out of the neck!

You might try a very LARGE straight/flat blade screwdriver hammered into the lock slot to be able to turn the cylinder....but try some more squirts of a good penetrating fluid ie. PB Blaster.

Is the tank empty?? If so, you could also take it off, and pull off the fuel sender plate, might allow you to get to the cap from the inside, or at least to be able to spritz more penetrant into/onto the underside of the cap?? JAT!?

I finally got the key to turn. Unfortunately it was because the bottom of the lock cylinder broke. By the time i got it off it was in a number of pieces. The dogs on the bottom were frozen, so i had a heck of a time bending things without damaging the tank. Now to order the new cap.
