  • Three point engine guard

Was installing my engine guards last weekend. After mounting the right side I realised the (long motor mount) bolt that goes thru both was not long enough. Any suggestions ???

3/8 threaded rod (ready rod) cut to length & put a nut on both ends.

I agree on the ready rod, but I would look for some that is better than the standard grade -4 crap you get at ace. I had some of that on my scoot, and it wouldn't take enough torque to do the job. Another option would be to find a machinist buddy with a lathe to single point thread some drill stock which could be heat treated after cutting.

Woah... I wish I had thought of that sooner...

You might be right about that. I thought about that too.

But also, there are 4 other mounting points.

Stainless steel is available from most fastener suppliers, and in metric sizes, that should be strong enough. I used 8mm stainless threaded rod to make exhaust studs.

I used all thread on my LG when I installed my 3-point guards. No problems in 3 years. Bike has the 1196 kit with 4 into 1. I'm not easy on the throttle at times .

            Thanks Guys

Did not really want to machine a 12" bolt or use allthread. Was wishing for
a known suitable replacement bolt. The bolt that came out appears to be grade 8. Man, I hate it when I wake up! I do have some 3/4 hex 4140 so looks like lathe time.

Seems like a lot of unnecessary work to me.

But, whatever blows your hair back.
