  • Stupid Wheel Bearing

Just got back to work from getting my rear tire changed. Had the shop take the wheel off and put it back on too. In the process the mechanic found that the left wheel bearing is failing. Not gone yet, but the inner race has lost it's lip so it's not fully staying together. Since this is the bearing apparently made of unobtainium, any ideas on the quickest way to get one (this one doesn't look long for this world)? Or anybody remember the part number (so I can see if my shop can get one)? I'll look and search, but I'm worried I may have to deadline Brutus until I can replace it before very much longer.

Oh to have known back when Randy was ordering them that I would need one, life would be so much better because I would have just handed them the new bearing and had them put it in.

Fastest way to fix your bike for now is get another rear wheel from Andreas. JAT

          Cy,
I think I may have one more "spare" in storage. send me a pm soon, as I'm going on a dive trip Friday VERY early. It may take a day to find, but should only take a day to get to Sac.

Why not get the measurements and head to the local IBT and see if they can match up something with a double ball race or the like. I understand the roller bearing is un available, but there are other types of bearings. A tapered bearing would't be the best answer since there is no way to breload it. I really don't see why a regular ball bearing wouldn't work, since the side loads are taken up between the right bearing and the spline hub...unless I am missing something here?

Sure, a ball bearing would work if there were enough room in the hub to mount one. The difference between the axle and the hub is only 17mm. Throw in two races and the balls would be so small they would burn up.

I don't think I am communicating well here. On front wheel drive cars, they use a single bearing that has two ball races in the hub. They are set in such a way as to take both radial loads and side loads. If a 6000 pound car can run on bearings with 5mm balls for 150k, I am pretty sure a 700 pound scoot could do quite well.

I hope that clarifies what I was thinking.

No doubt, it's just that no one makes one that'll handle the load in the dimensions we need!
