  • Final drive copper spacer

While I had the bike this far apart, I decided to remove the final drive to grease the shaft splines and to also check on the copper spacer used when installing the 750 final drive. There have been some worries about whether copper would be stout enough to survive. I have put a couple years and well over 40k miles on the bike with lots of hard takeoffs, many many top speed runs, hundreds of wheelies, and most of the accumulated miles done in Oklahoma. Those that have driven on the roads here will understand that one. Not quite as bad as Iowa's... but close. lol. Lots of bumps and holes in spots.

Anyway, it appears the spacer has been impacted on the end slightly like maybe it was just a tad too long, but the spacer slips on and off still and is in good shape.

So... less worry to anyone who is using a brass/copper spacer. Seems to work just fine for the long haul...

Try your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.

You can live to be 100, as long as you give up everything that would make you want to live to be 100!

Tod - I kind of figured copper would work OK in that location. It turns with the u-joint, so it seems like the only real forces on it are from the spring. Still, it's good to get some confirmation on that. I like the Estwing too - that's a hammer you'll only have to buy once - unless someone relieves you of it .
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

'79 XS11 Standard, Jardine 4/1, Dyna DC1-1 Coils, 145 mains, 45 pilots, plastic floats - 25.7mm, XV920 fuel valves, inline fuel filters, speed bleeders, Mikes XS pods, spade-type fuse block, fork brace, progressive fork springs/shocks, manual petcocks, 750 FD, Venture cam chain tensioner, SS brake lines

      Thanks Tod,

Thanks for that positive report on the spacer.

Although I wasn't really worried because I couldn't see any way there could be a wear problem there. Some of the others' worries have stuck in the back of my mind though.

After seeing that yours has virtually no wear after 2 years and 40K i fell a lot more confident.

I love the way that FD feels.

I hope ya'll take lots of pics of Ivan's trans repair and post updates so I can see what's going on. I might need to do this someday although, knock on wood, I'm not having any issues right now.

I would like to be there and witness the whole thing and soak up the knowledge, and that extra portion of beer.

I probably won't have to worry about it for a while though. My bike only showed 38k and then when I changed the speedo to the 140mph it dropped back down to 11k. So I'm probably OK.

Now if we only knew where we could find a good road crew & supervision to fix 'em... LOL

Seriously... you got that right... my eye teeth are killing me, (as well as my kidneys,) from driving 412 so much lately.

And... I give up totally on Tulsa streets... if they're not torn up under construction, they're just torn up. Terrible.

        Oklahoma roads... a biker's nightmare.

Your right on about Tulsa Bob. I work on Peoria Ave a block from Myers Duran
HD. Peoria is a dead end street at I44 going both north and south because of the widening destruction on I44 where the old Camelot Hotel used to be.

It takes me 10 minutes to get to work and 30 minutes to get home becouse of the routes I must take now.

Ya know... I'm glad they finally 'found' the $$ to work on the streets in Tulsa, (especially after all the crap they spewed about being broke and couldn't...) Amazing how much $$ can be found in city coffers when the citizens rise up united and VOTE AGAINST certain river TAX projects and threaten to vote the idiots out! But why do they always want to tear up EVERY street in the entire town @ the same time, for years, to do it? Be nice, if for once, they'd take it a project at a time so you could at least have an alternate route...
Makes it obvious to me who's been in charge of the asylum way too long...
At least we know there is definitely going to be a change in the guard coming up shortly... hearing our old mayor is on her way out was music to my ears!
But as usual, look who our replacement choices are...
