the 40 mm width he is referring to is the width of the cross where the caps seat. the lugs stick out further. If the retaining rings are internal, then the best way would be to measure the distance between the eyes of the yoke, because the retaining rings are the critical width. On external rings the total width is critical.

OK.. I did measure with the caps off and the cross of the body of the U-joint was that 53mm. I went out and measured in between the yoke where the retainer clips would sit and that was between 1.574 and 1.575.. so right at 40mm. Where the actual caps seat on the cross of the body of the joint is only @ 27mm apart.
So when looking up an internal clip U-joint, is that 40mm as he stated what they need to look for it... and the actual tallness (Is that a word?) of the caps doesn't really matter as long as they're 20mm diameter?
It would appear Steptoe is correct if this is the case... I just hate taking someones word with no explanation, I guess, as to why.. lol. Trusting soul, ain't I?

you have worked it out though,, the 40 mm is taken between the internal machined faces of the yoke that the clips fit against .
the 20 mm is the circumference of the cap in the yoke, only being a press fit ,you have to have the clips on the inside because the centrifugal force would throw the joint apart
don't know what you guys have in the way of brand shops, but if you find industrial type bearing shops you should be rightnever ride faster than your gaurdian angel

So.. just wondering if anyone has found a source for these U-joints? I have checked all the auto parts stores, bearing places, farm implement places, Toyota and forklift companies... with no luck. They have a 38mm by 20mm listed with inside clips, but afraid that 2mm slop at high rpm would be disasterous before long.
If someone has a local place, I'd be glad to pay for the part and shipping. If I can't get one, I'll just drill the caps on this one and install the grease zerts.. but I'd rather have new.

This may be WAY out there....but WTF.
There was an old timer that used to remanufacture exhauset manifolds for old John Deere tractors. This guy had sand casting forms and such, and poured his own. He had a mini foundry.
Ill check in my area (that guy died about 10 years ago) to see if there is anybody that still does this, maybe all the folks on Channel 11 could do the same.
IF somebody comes up with a good original, once the form is made, im sure this guy could change them from unobtanium to sumwhatobtainium, especially if there were several dozen ordered....

How about a 1mm thick make-up washer under each clip?
You're thinking the wrong way. With a 41mm, the top of the grooves the clips fit in would be slightly up into the yoke by .5mm on each side which may mean the clips won't fit into the groove.
I finally found a source for them online. I have been talking with a guy named Jason, (Very nice and helpfull) at theujointstore.com who went back in his books to find out who originally supplied the U-joint to Yamaha. The company still makes them. I told him a little about our bikes and this site and he ordered 6 of them for his shelf and can get 10 more if interested. These replacement U-joints are greaseable with a needle tip.. not a regular grease zert, but they aren't cheap. $42.50 each.. and I didn't ask him about shipping fees. I'll probably order one from him, I just can't get one today. Unless someone knows of a much cheaper option. I'm not going to mess with a $5 difference for as helpfull as he was. He is also going to list our bikes on his website.. I gave him the years and models... in case someone tries to look them up that way.
