  • How fast was "Enough" for you ?

My neighbor, (05 1800 Goldwing) and I were running about 75 on the freeway. I wanted to know that I had the xxlls to out run his Goldwing. I called it quits at about 126 and still climbing. Even though I had a jump on him, it didn't take long for him to pull up along side me. Fast enough for me , how about you ?

Well for those of us with the 80 and later rides (and speedometers) and no bike mounted GPS, we can only guess. With stock FD I have tacked up to about 7500-8000 in 5th gear on a lonely stretch of superslab in no mans land Kentucky.

I WOTed it in 5th without shifting down at all on a sraight streach of back road west of Tulsa.

I hit 116 before it started getting a little lazy and I ran out of open space.

At least according to the 140 mph speedo I have off an 850.

I have had my 80SG with a 79 160 speedo pegged for miles before and it only read about 125 ish. My friends Honda 919 read about 140 so I'm guessing it was really at the 135 ish range, which is supposed to be the XS11's max with the stock final gear anyways. The 160 speedometers don't seem to be very accurate and I haven't tried it with my gps yet. 150 mph has been my top speed barrier for about 5 years now which I've matched using my TLR not to long ago, just not enough room in DFW to open it up.

You know Jeremy, my 81 speedo of the 85 MPH variety is not to accurate either. I have calculated it to be off by a minimum of 5 MPH in the 70 MPH range.

I don't think any speedometers are really accurate, but the 160 does make for good conversation. I always forget about grabbing the gps when I go for a ride, I just want to have fun.

Well, I have hit 100 which is enough with a standard doo rag, for anything over about 120, you really need one with a chin strap.

                      Hi Vedgar and welcome,
fastest I've ridden was on a slower bike than an XS11. Bought a BMW R90 back in the mid 1980s, first bike I'd ever had with a fairing on it. Pushed it home, inflated the ratty tires, borrowed the battery and the plate from my XS650, fired it up and took it for an illegal test ride just to see how it would go.
top speed in 3rd was ~80kph, 4th took it to ~110kph and no more than ~125kph in high. Nice quiet ride behind that fairing but I was saddened by the lack of zip. Then I had a thought. This is a '74. This speedo reads in MILES per hour. Oh Christ. Snapped the grip shut and puttered quietly home.
These days I don't ride that fast, even by accident. The rig would perhaps reach the magic "ton" but I chicken out at 70mph.

I have been known to go more than 600 mph... but I always ask the pilot to slow the hell down. Like, where's the freakin' fire?

You people are crazy. I get to 90 and start thinking to myself that if I keep driving like this. On two wheels. On a 30-year-old bike. That I rebuilt MYSELF. I will never really make it to 90.

I want to know my great grandchildren.

it seemed to me that it still wanted to go but also I think the front wheel is either unbalanced or was coming off the ground since it started to shake.... kinda scary.
I ride with a bunch of crotch rockets so I usually am cruising around 90 to 120..... a little weaving here and there. Although, not having a second gear now REALLY sucks
