  • Swing arm & shaft

dropped the swing arm out today whilie I was waiting for the cowboy's game to start. Am I correct in assuming that the shaft and swing arm is one unit?

IT will coem out that way, but the shaft can be removed form the swingarm. The swingarm has a tube in it that the shaft rides in, that is an integral part of the swingarm.

the grease must be preventing me from seeing the method. Does the final drive end of the shaft come off then the shaft pulled out from the U joint end?

There is a C-clip on the end of the shaft where it protrudes through the u-joint. If you have it removed, you may be able to see that and remove the C-clip.

I have removed the shaft without removing the dust cover from the u-joint or the swing arm. To do that, I put a piece of 12-gauge wire around the drive shaft at the final drive end above the gear area that interlocks with the final drive. I then took a pair of vice grip pliers to grab the wire and hit the pliers with a rubber mallot to drive the shaft out without pulling the C-clip.

Personally I think they go back together easier with the drive shaft clipped into the swing arm - makes it easier to get the splines back into the u-joint. If you've got the swing-arm out you just need to clean some of the gunk off the u-joint end and find the circlip. Remove it and the drive shaft will slide right out. If you force the drive shaft out you probably won't be able to reuse the clip. Unless you're going to put a 750 FD on it, you'll probably want to put it back in place. My $.02
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

            Sounds easy, phhht!!

Taking the swing arm off and the manual says:

Slide back the rubber protective boot and remove the 4 bolts (A, figure 19) securing the drive shaft to the middle gear housing.

I remember this being a PITA before but cannot recall how I finall got it down. So how did you others keep the shaft from turning when you loosen off those bolts?

            Thanks,
            Scott

Immobilize the rear wheel with a 2 X 4 through the spokes. 'Course you've got to do that before you remove the rear wheel.

I just put the engine in gear. loosened one bolt, pop it out of gear and turn the wheel to turn the joint to next bolt, and repeat four times.

                  in 1st!

and that kept it from turning.
the swing arm is out and that is it for playtime this weekend.
                  Thanks for the tip.
