it ain't just the size, typically a front tire will have a more rounded profile and a tread pattern designed to grip while leaned over and while braking. A rear tire will have a flatter profile and a tread designed to grip while accelerating.
Back when bikes had the same size rims front & back Dunlop & Avon made interrupted rib fronts & block tread rears. Michelin made the same tire that went on one way on the front & the other way on the back.
