    It's not perfect....

    But I'll use it. I figure the only ones staring at this area of my tank hard enough to notice the imperfections are hot, lustful U of Texas coeds and they aren't looking at the tank at all.

    Meanwhile, back in the real world, here's my fix....

    The way it was:



    What I did (several layers of bondo over several days)....



    How it looks now....



    The dents pushed out the bottom of the tank a bit, as you can see if you look closely, but I'm thinking the seat will camouflage that. The rest of the patch actually is more rounded that the light lets it appear in the picture.

    I will totally use this tank now.

    Great job. Looks like it will all cover pretty well with the seat etc. The blue you used is great.

      Thanks, Gary. I really like that shade of blue too. I can't get my camera so show the texture. It is a metal flake paint with big metal flakes. It really sparkles in sunlight, but I can't get that to show up on film.

        A real work of art with the bondo. I hope it does hold because it is a pretty deep repair.

          I have some concerns about its durability as well, Skids. But I already had the Bondo and the paint and my alternative was to toss the tank. I really had nothing to lose and potentially a nice tank to gain. That's why I did six thin layers of Bondo and let them cure well between coats. The rest of the tank is solid and it already was lined.

          Only time will tell.

            My standard tank (81) was in better shape internally than either of my other tanks... But had a HUGE dent in the right side of it where the PO layed it down. i couldnt get the dent out, so instead of going that deep with Bondo, i tack welded some studs all around to give it something to grab onto. I used fiberglass mesh as well. seems to be holding up rather well. From hot days of 100+ degrees with high humidity, to lows of 10- . Been that way for a year now and no issues as of yet....

              Gives me sympathy pains to think of what may have caused those dents...


              i tack welded some studs all around to give it something to grab onto.

              Could you not have used those to grab on to and pull that dent out some?

                i tried. but was leary that my puller would puncture the tank elswhere....snapped two studs trying to pull it out.... they just dont make steel the way they used to. this stuff is tuff!!

                  Turned out nice! Bondo can be wonderful stuff.....

                  If you prepped it good (roughed up the metal with 24 or 36 grit discs), you'll have zero worries about it coming out, unless of course you try to duplicate the original dents.... but that'll be the least of your problems!
