has any one ever installed an atomotive type tach on thier xs. i hav ebeen through 3 tachs and all have had problems i do have an auto gage monster tach and was windering if there is any way to make it work. it wires to the positive side of the cars coil for a signal, i was under the impression that the xs works off the alternator any help would be appreciated

I was wondering the same. Auto tachs get signal from the coil trigger and will work on 4 cyl engines.... but that is with a single coil firing all 4. Don't know how it would work on a 2 coil system unless it could feed off the same lead as the factory tach.

I need to do something about the tach on my 78. It works well up to about 4k....... then just starts bouncing back and forth from about 4k to 9k in a nice wide and even swing.

When we had problems with the tach on SWMBO's 'H, it turned out to be a single badly corroded contact within one of the plastic connector blocks. We nailed it down by idling the bike on the centrestand then wiggling and tugging at the connectors and each wire going into and out of each sdie of the connector. It is amazing how much grief one or two bad connectors cn cause..

The XS has an electronic tach...not a mechanical one like a lot of bikes....so I would say you have a problem with a connector or a bad wire or something. Hows you charging circuit? The feed comes right off the rect/reg module i think.

I wired in a suntach on mine because the stock one was wobbling badly. I figured out the wiring on the stocker, i.e. lights fuel gage and tach wires. I cut the wires from the tach and left the stock plug in place, then I sliced the wires out of the plug to the proper wires to the new tach. You will need to either switch or wire the new tach for 8 cylinder. The coils fire on both the intake and exhaust, so for each two revolutions of the crank the coils will fire 8 times just like a V8.

Autometer has a division called Procycle. The guages are really nice white faced, but very expensive. I have actually had a tach. go bad, but replaced it with one off of ebay. I have an extra one that I'll give you for shipping charges. I never used it, but it may be worth while. The're right though, commonly it's a bad connection.
