    Fellow XSives -

I was pleasantly surprised this morning when Ed Conley and Doug Mitchell showed up at my house on their XJ1100s from Fredericton, NB. It was a great day for riding in Maine and New Brunswick, and Caribou must've been just the right distance.

Bill, Ed, and Doug in Caribou

We spent the day looking over my "new" '79 Standard, "unXSpected", and theorizing about the sources of its low RPM misfire/backfire and high RPM stutter. The two of them left me with lots of ideas to look at, starting with the simple ones (not requiring disassembly). Doug suggested that it might be related to the ignition coils or wires. He said there's a great coil rebuilding article somewhere here at XS11.COM.

After more theorizing and general BS-ing, we headed out for some roll-on accelleration testing. We tested 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears, and Doug walked away from me each time. The high speed stutter at 5-6k RPM didn't help but, all in all, the "unXSpected" is performing well.

We turned around and headed to Burger Boy for lunch and BS-ed some more and further pondered the unXSpected stutter. I'm thinking fuel starvation, they thought maybe something electrical. So, for now, the plan is to:
    • Install a fresh set of plugs
    • Check resistance values on ignition coils and wires
    • Check fuel lines for kinks, restrictions, etc.
    • Check for intake/exhaust leaks
    • Check and re-set float height, if necessary
In any case, it was a great "Mini XS/XJ Rally". Counting my "parked XSs, there were 5 present. Counting the Suzukis there were nine. (Does it count if there's nobody riding the bikes?)

We're planning to get together again soon, perhaps in Fredericton, for more tinkering bs-ing and ??? Who knows, maybe we could even hook up with some other XSives in NB, NS and ME...

    Spoogin'?

You might give sea-foam a shot, yu never know if it runs that good it could be just a little gas-spooge and a sync job from perfect! (well, maybe almost) Sometimes it's not what you do but rather what you don't do (At least untill off-season when you can do the triple clean)
