  • total frame tear down..

Here's where I'm at right now

    Any suggestions on:
-2 couplers at top of steering neck which will allow bottom of tripple clamp to be dropped down (rusted old one stuck on good, sprayed PB blaster..) Don't know what tool SHOULD be used
-swingarm/driveaxle and wheel drive unit. Just not 100% sure yet what will need to be done, stripping down frame and rear swingarm completely to sandblast and paint together.

Take the top nut of the tripple tree then,
Did you loosen the allen bolt on the left top of the frame neck?

Should just come out then, if not put nut back on ... just not all the way down, use a piece of wood or something to protect the nut and rap it with a hammer. Don't get carried away. You can always hit it harder but only takes once to hit something too hard and screw it up.

Final drive, remove the four nuts holding it to the swing arm and the drive will come out with the shaft attached.

I've got the first big bolt and allen bolt out of the neck, its the 2 couplers that are left you are supposed to have the special tool for.
I will try with a big pipe wrench now..

I'll pull the final drive/driveshaft out of the swingarm.
How about the two chrome caps on either side of the frame? Do they just pry straight off, and then I'll see how to detach the swingarm from the frame?

I'm building a custom bike, yeah its sort of a cafe style..

got it all except steering neck..

frame ALONE isn't all THAT heavy, its these damn wheels/discs/forks/shocks/etc that all together add up to a heavy rolling chassis.

The bottom frame bars that run under the engine, there was a spot on one side that was split open about 2" and pipe bulged a little there. I'll have to weld that up, minor steel work to still do and frame will be ready I'll have it sandblasted and be done stripping.

I believe I am going to use high quality body filler and make my bare frame very fancy before I prime and paint it with the best auto paints also.
Candy red frame, this is going to be a hot detailed bike!
Wheels will be the candy red/black too.

So it sounds like water got in the frame and then froze.Hence the bulge and split. Is it in the left side?Is the tube on the other side damaged too?
If it sat on the side stand maybe it was just one side.

It sat under a deck for like 7 years.
Yeah it was only on the left kickstand side.

The frame was leaking water on the ground when I was turning it around different directions.

Very cool to see what you start with and how it progresses.
Sorry about the half a$$ answer. Should have looked closer at your pic.
Wish I had the space you've got to work in. Makes me miss my shop.

Sure it wasn't just marking it's territory?
