  • Aftermarket or Alternative Braking Setup

Hello everyone, I must say this forum site is great, its an extremely valuable resource for someone building up one of these awesome bikes!
So today I was continuing my tear down of the XJ 1100 bobber project and I came to the braking system. The system's condition is absolutely deplorable, not to mention I'm actually missing the left front caliper. So now I am thinking about doing a totally new system. If it comes down to it I can always buy other XJ 1100 calipers and rebuild them but if possible I'd like to go another route. Has anyone had success adapting brakes from another model bike or from an aftermarket supplier on one of these bikes? I would like to put new rotors on then look at calipers, I'm assuming the biggest issue would be getting calipers that mount to the stock mounting points on the bike. At the very least I'll do SS brake lines with rebuilt stock parts, I'm just hoping there are other options.

I'm working on reproducing the YZF-R1 caliper conversion kit for the XS11. I don't know how much different the XJ caliper mounts are.

Right now the kit is penciling in around a hundred bucks and you would have to scrounge up your own calipers.

That sounds excellent.. keep me posted on the kit ... it's pretty much exactly what I would like. Though I doubt my project's budget would allow for it, these brackets would work with Brembo brakes too right?

I would need to have a set of Brembo calipers to figure it out. I like the R1 calipers because this way you can still get parts from a Yamaha dealer.

Dunno, but looking at the standard forks, it looks like the Venture front calipers would bolt right on. I don't have a standard, so I can't say for sure. The old Ventures use double piston calipers. Not sure if it would help or not.

If the double piston venture calipers really are a bolt up mod, then they would be worth it. Your probably looking at a 5 to 10% improvement in the front brakes and even better with stainless lines.
