  • "BlackSunshine" needs massaging!!!

Hey all....just figure out how to get some pics here while at work....These are photos of 'Sunshine in her original (to me) form.
THis is the monster that spurred me to ask about the carb cleaning bout a week ago...THANKS for all the help. AWESOME!!

Aside from getting the b!tch running (carbs, brakes), i plan on doing some minor mods....
    1. losing those awful looking mirrors, replacing with lower profile style...
    2. losing the suitcase looking, not very bright, broken tail/brake light, replacing it with LED tail light. [IMG]http://www.motolanna.com/ourshop/prod_449450-Cast-Polished-Alloy-LED-Taillight.html[IMG]
    3. Putting some turn signals on....
4.cutting down the rear fender to show off a bit more of the tire..
    5. trying to fit an earlier year rear cowl/seat ( can that be done??? Sunshine is an 80G..... )
    6. i ordered (from ebay) stainless lines (70 bucks...seem like good quality..will notify of fitment issues if any), new front master from MikesXS, and a new rear m/c from XSlover on this site( looks great btw!!!)
    7. Accel coils that i picked up...CHEAP!! (called Accel bout an hour ago, and THEY cant tell me what the output is!!! WTF!!!!) to replace the stockers.

anybody have ideas how to clean the cast aluminum carb bodies without destroying everything? I was thinking a mild solution of muratic acid...but i dont know if that is a good route. dremel and stone???

Any thoughts on to the header?? Looks like maybe a Kerker 'can', but the header, dunno. It is clean. This bike has been sitting over 2 years. No rust on the 4 head pipes....under the bike where its welded to collector its starting to rust (the pipe and can)....

Try soda blasting. It looks like it should work pretty well. Some day, I'll get around to trying it myself.

Thanks 'Bug....... never would have thought of that one. the rails on the carbs just look like crap.the bodies look like someone tried to paint them a 'copper' color at some time....maybe gold...something metallic...and the years of goo that finds its way into EVERYTHING!!!...i used various grades of sandpaper on the float bowls, and they look good....(1+4 carbs).

Want to do a fun scientific experiment? Put your carbs into muriatic acid and measure how long it takes for them to dissolve completely.

I did that once with an old carb from a Honda. They bubble up really high. It was pretty cool. Use a TALL glass container....

I have a lawn vacuum that sucks up leaves and mulches them. Last fall, the engine seized on me. This last Spring, I cracked the case open and found that the crankshaft had actually melted some of the aluminum case, and welded itself together. I managed to get it out, and used muriatic acid directly on the crankshaft to eat away the melted aluminum. It bubbled like a skinned knee and hydrogen peroxide! After about an hour of wiping and brushing, the aluminum was completely gone, and the crankshaft was nice and shiny. I then re-assembled with no ill-effects! Still working fine this fall (so far).

Thanks!!! I couldnt get the photo to load properly!!!

I purchased the first one about 8 months ago, liked it enuf to buy the second one a couple of weeks ago.

On the back of the aluminum housing i had to smear a thin coat of clear silicone and let it dry. this keeps it from scratching the paint on my fender...due to not having a rubber gasket to fit this puppy!!!!

Here are a couple of photos of "GreyGhost" with the LED taillight installed...

"Ghost" (due to tank and fairing being primer grey right now), and '81, with a 78 or 79 seat and rear cowl "mock up" with relocated turn signals.....

                  [IMG][/IMG]

a closer shot of same bike and setup.....

                  [IMG][/IMG]

                  a photo from the side....

                  [IMG][/IMG]

another photo.... sorry they are dark...took them at 330 this morning...and the light in my garage is not good on that side....i had to cover the "tag" cuz the flash reflecting off of it made it impossible to see the pics...

i will try to get better photos today....

I like the light. Is it an incandescent or LED?

BTW, you also made me feel a whole lot better about the state of my own garage....
