  • My Winter Project

My new XJ I picked up last weekend.

A BIG thanks to 81XSProject for going to look at this for me before I drove 4 hours to pick it up. It has a lot of oxidation from being in a costal area but so far is cleaning up nicely. I already have a new seat, forks, and exhuast on the way from a guy parting out one on this site.

By spring it should be all nice and shiney with a fresh coat of paint on the tank and covers.

Nice pick up. I picked up a XJ last fall to get me thru the winter. I have really enjoyed working on the Max and its a really fun bike. You will find its even more sensitive to intake system modes and leaks than the XS. Also the Hitachi's are close to the carbs you are use to on the XS just not as easy to get parts for. There is a guy on the XJbikes.com web site that will have just about everything you could need. The YICS system can be a PITA as you have to make or buy a tool to do a sync. Have fun

Hello tomatao, welcome to the site. As wingnut said, the YICS system is nothing more than a PITA. Just stick one of my YICS Eliminators in your bike and leave it there, problem solved.

        YICS Eliminator

I can attest to that. Once I installed mine all carb synch probs went away.

Looks like I'll be ordering a YICS Eliminator!!

I'll be pulling the carbs later on and cleaning them. The bike was running pretty good when I got it. The cam chain was noisey. The PO had installed a new chain tensioner but I don't think he set it properly. I loosened it (following the well written tech tips of course) and heard it adjust. I pulled the valve cover to get that yucky black paint off it. The chain tension appears to be right. I don't have a new gasket yet so I haven't put it back together and tried it.

I'm going to replace the coil wires while I have the tank off anyway so I'm in no rush. I have my trusty 79SF to ride in between rain storms. I have to let it know that even though I have another bike it is still my first love.

            My Bust

I just looked at the pics again and realized that you had an 1100. At first glance I thought it was a 750. So You will have the Marconi carbs not the Hitachi's. Sorry for the mistake. But you knew that already

Hey nice bike tomatao, looks like we both choose the Maxim as a winter project. Your bike looks great as it sits, I can't wait to see how it looks after your restoration. Sadly mine still needs much more sandblasting haha.
