  • Tank for SF done

    or ... done enough

While it looks good over all would not hurt to make it perfect with a little cut/buff and clear coat on it.
Maybe next time as I think I will put on tonight.

Hmmm...Are std "special" tanks supposed to have that chrome strip around the bottom? I know mine does not have it. But then when I got it the PO had painted all the emblems black so he might have removed it as it was to shiney for him.

Is it a STD tank? It doesn't look like it has the knee indents??

            Hey Don,

Yes, the Specials are supposed to have the chrome accent strip around the front. You can get some adhesive plastic chrome fender or door trim to put on it. However, the heat from the engine keeps causing mine to come loose around the bottom front. The OEM strip had little metal clips that held the strip in place. I might need to apply some stronger adhesive for that problem!

Hughes, he was saying that regular styled/standard styled "SPECIAL" tanks, were they supposed to have the chrome strip....yes that is a Special tank.

            Mike, nice and shiney!

You guys and your fancy paint jobs lately... I'm jealous! Nice job though. I would definitely suggest several coats of clear on it though. Fuel tends to eat the paint.

                  Hi TC,
None of my XS11 tanks had an accent strip at all by the time they got to me but as my XS650s
all had black accent strips I thought the XS11 strips would be black too.
I could never find a supplier for the black stuff and I never bothered getting the chrome stuff
which you can get almost anywhere because it wouldn't be authentic.
And now you say chrome strips are stock?
                  On the Standard too?
BTW MRO, nice finish on that SF tank.

                          Sorry for the confusing post.

TC interpretted it correctly, I was trying to figure out if my SH should have a chrome strip around the tank as it has nothing and I do not recall any of the other SWOXS groups tanks having one either. Not even Steppenwolf's and he is the original owner of an SG.

I put the term STD before the Special to try to exclude the MNS version. Poor choice of terminology given the STD = a separate model.

Ray, I saw the chrome strip on his. That is what drove me to ask the question, as mine has nada and as previously stated I even went to a picture of Steppenwolf's bike taken this past weekend and do not see the chrome strip on it.

                          Thanks for answers!!

Now back to the original post prior to my hijacking........That is an awesome looking paint job!! I would definitely protect it with some clear.

It did have a black strip originally which did not survive removal in one piece.
The Merriam SF tank strip is black and so is the LG.
The chrome strip had been hanging on the wall for years before it found it’s new home.

                            mro
PS, the tank was done with a two part urethane
                            should be gas resistant?

Hey Don, the "special" tank on my "standard" had the chrome stuff when I got it, it had been abused by heat and gas leaks over the years and was looking pretty bad, so I canned it a paint job or two ago. so I did actually have one on my "frankensteinesque" XS. I guess if I thought about it, I might have kept it for sentimental reasons, but I have to admit I HATE my gas tank, leaks and all...actually it's the leaks I hate, I just wish it would hold more fuel. have a nice day and ride safe
