    Ok the info all of you guys gave seems to be right when I took another look. I cleaned everything and now need to go get a vacuum line for the octy. My question is when I get it and connect it to the octy where does the other end go? Everyone is telling me the #2 intake boot. I looked and there is already a line ran from that to a nipple on the #2 carb. Also it is way too short to connect to the octy. What is going on? It was like that when I bought the bike. Should I just run the vacuum line to any of the intake boots like I was told and cap the others off?

      Woaaaa....I probably misread this I hope but, what you SHOULD have is a vacuum line form the nipple on the outlet side of carb #2 (that on the body of the carb not the black rubber intake manifold boot) that runs down to the timing vacuum advance under the engine cover on the left side of the bike.

      If you choose to run the Octy, the the vacuum line from it can go to any of the nipples on the intake manifold boots as previously stated (the nipples tight up against the engine head on each of the four boots). The other three must be plugged off.

        No it's like I said. I see the timing vacuum. Should I connect the line to the nipple on the #2 carb body? I see the nipple and t currently has a short line running from the black rubber boot to the niple on the #2 carb body. Like I said the line from the boot to the carb is very short and can't run to anything that is a distance away like the octy. What should I do or change?

            Carb issue

            Guys,
            I heard from someone today who went to school for metric bikes...I asked him about my xs11 because the petcocks were modified(the vacuum plungers taken out) and independent shutoff valves put inline...Since my vacuum daiphram is missing id say this is why the inline shutoffs were installed>>to stop the leaking and filling the engine with gas....Anyways i hear that if the petcock is leaking(without the internal plunger it will continually run)..Before deciding to switch to non vaccum petcocks to get rid of the inline shutoffs >>.Does anyone know where to get a diaphram from fro a 78 xs 1100E????? Also, how do I put a pic of my bike on my threads or comments??? New guy on the block,Kevin

              Hey Kevin, A few items to go over here.

              First off, the petcocks themselves do not let the carbs overfill into the engine and or air box. The individual float valve controls the fuel flowing into the carb. Shutting off the petcock to stop the flow only solves the issue while the bike is not in use. As soon as you try to run the bike, the float will still overflow the carb and it will run like crap because your one cylinder is WAY rich. Petcock stops fuel from gettign to the carb bowl. The float valve stops fuel from flowing into the the carb bowl when it reaches the set level.

              Two, where to get the petcock rebuild kit (if that was what you were asking about getting the diaphram for). If it were me, as I do NOT own a standard. I would check with Georgefix on Ebay. He carries most kits for these bikes to fix the brakes and fuel systems. He is a good person to deal with IMO. bought plenty of stuff from him with good shipping times and great quality. He also seems to know these bikes pretty well.

              Three, pics. First you have to get a hosting site to put the pics on the internet like photobucket.com. Then, look for a thread Catatonic Bug put together in the members lounge as a tutorial on how to put pics in. Well done and more detail than I care to type out.

                Thank you for the info...I am missing the vacuum daiphram thats supposedly to control the carbs...I will look on ebay at georfix`s parts and see what I can come up with thank you....Look forward to seeing alot of you folks this spring and summer...Kevin
