  • I think I ruined my cylinder head

I lapped the valves, replaced seals, and checked springs for spec.
    It was all good.

Putting back the lifters they do not want to go in.
I tapped one in with a rubber mallet. (I don't have a good feeling about it)
They are not the same as they came out meaning they moved freely.

    Did i ruin the head?

I'm bummed hope someone could advise me.

    Thanks
    Rick

Do you mean the shim bucket?

Those need to be lined up just right or they bind.Maybe put a little oil around the outside and carefully finesse them in.
I wouldn't pound them in with a mallet. If you lightly tapped it in it may be ok.Does it move at all now that it is in?

You are right Tarzan. I found due to my inexperiance I caused my own problem.

I did find the way to finese them in.
      Have all of them in.
The 2 that I tapped in at the beginning are not as free as the rest.

I installed the cam and rotated a few revolutions and they seem to move up and down.

To be safe I'm going to rotate the cam to push the lifter down pour some penatrating oil over the lifter and let it sit.
Then work it from time to time.

I would think that after the engine is running and heated up it will be as free as the rest.
      I'm hoping anyway.

You could always pull it out and buff it lightly with some 600 grit or so sandpaper coated with oil to clean both surfaces up. This is strictly a mechanical lift machine so the hydraulics fo the seal are not important but you want it to be tightish in there.

          Thanks DGXSER.

BTW I guess with the head off the bike I could install the cams to check valve clearance.
As I see it would be a hell of a lot easier to replace a shim and should be just as acurate. Right?

          TIA

When you pulled them apart, did u put them back in the
same place as they came out? I use an egg carton marked with
intake/ exhaust numbered 1 -4. so you cant get them mixed up.

You should be sweet tho, as you said, once the engine is running
            it should free up.

You can set the clearances with the head off, but you'll only want to have one cam in at a time. If you do it with both cams in your liable to bend a valve. On the buckets, I've found that a brake cylinder hone and a drill motor works well to get them back in.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.
