    Help a new guy out

Hi, I am a new owner of a 79 XS and I love it! this site has been a goldmine of information for me. thanks to you all. I have a problem that I hope someone can help me with. I tore my carbs down and cleaned them and when I put everything back together the bike idles well but only if I hold the choke open and the choke will not stay on by itself. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you lost a small bb like ball or two. I dont know what they are called, but the go behind the choke rod on the carbs to hold it in place, there are also springs behind the balls. That is most likely why the choke wont stay on by itself.
Have you warmed the bike up all the way since cleaning the carbs? What exactly did you do to them?

Also sounds like you may need to tweak the idle speed adjustment screw - look for a small thumbwheel adjustment between #2 and #3 carbs
