are you meant to be able to hear the valves ticking shut on an xs while it's running. newly built xs1100RH, timing marks and clearance good, but pretty loud ticking noise coming from cam shaft area - especially exhaust. i know it sounds like pinging and i know what this is but seems to be running too well.

The valves on an XS are not quiet no matter what you do. I would check for an exhaust leak, if none found, then you probably are just hearing the normal sound of a well running beast.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

When they get really noisy on top it's usually cam chain tension. Supposed to be checked every 1k miles. If you lapped your valves during the rebuild you will want to check the clearances again at 6k miles - they seat faster after a lapping. Gotta agree with Don though - a happy XS is usually a little noisy on top. It's kind of like having a wife - after you've listened to it long enough you get good at tuning it out .I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

Once I heard a ticking noise and found a leak at the exhaust header/head connection. Another time, I found a bad spark plug connector/wire connection.Skids (Sid Hansen)

How about camchain tension?
How much play does it have if you try to wiggle it a bit?
My old 78 got a bit noisy up top... more than usual. Checked the tensioner but I dont think this is it.
Also, how do I know when its time to change the camchain? The bike did about 20k since it got a new camchain, but still... any ideas? If it doesn't have an engine, it's not a sport, it's only a game.

Anyone? (bump)
20,000 should not have worn the chain enough to need replacement.
Have one with 51,000 and it is fine and is quiter than another with 21,000.
If worried, check that there is still adjustment left on the tensioner.

A chain should be good for at least 50K miles (80K km). You know it is time to replace when there is no more adjustment left in the tensioner.2H7 (79) owned since '89
