That's a bit misleading since the XS and the XJ don't take the same filter. I remember Maximan did a mod and made a K&N to fit his XJ at one time, but don't know if the pics survived the website move.

It doesn't look like the pics survived, but maybe the explanation is simple enough. It also has the K&N part number...

Tod & the gang...
Cody had given me a new modded K&N air filter for the Maxim... one that he had done a while back.
It worked fine... until...
I still haven't changed out the old float valves yet, but have the new parts. The other day, I parked the bike uphill, and forgot to turn off the petcocks.
Gas... all in the airbox again. But this time, it totally saturated the air filter, and he had used a lot of red RTV to 'glue' the ends together.
It swelled, dissolved the RTV, and ruined the filter. Quite a mess to clean up.
Just ordered a new OEM from Yamaha... w/ tax... $56.47
As long as your float valves are good, the cheaper mod works fine. But if yours happen to be like mine and they leak... go with the stock air filter.
Makes me sick.... looking at all these places that sell air filters for every other model Yamaha from that era... $5 - $8 ea.
Unless by now, there's been a better place to buy that's cheaper?
Ohhh, and you guys can bank on me getting the new float valves installed BEFORE the new air filter goes in... especially at those prices!
