    Left Side Cover question

My left side cover on my 78 Standard has suddenly developed a problem. Driving down the road the other day at about 50mph..... the darned thing fell off. No major damage other than a few scratches.

My problem is that it does not appear to want to latch into place on the bottom. The little "L" shaped pin that fits into the locking mechanism is still there but it appears that something has broken off the tip. I cannot remember what it looked like originally.... so.... is there some sort of barb or something that the lock mechanism holds onto to keep the pin engaged?

Is there any way to fix it without running a screw through the bottom or something? I'd really like to restore it to the way it keylocked originally.... short of finding a good replacement cover.

Jeff, I have one that I could part with. It is from a 79F.
It's in good shape. No cracks or scratches. Has no badge, and is primed for paint.
The emission control sticker is still on the inside.
The lock tab as well as the two slots are in great shape.
Fifteen bucks sound reasonable? ( I have been giving away a lot of parts, but now I need to set aside a few bucks for another purchase that I am trying to justify).
If you want it, let me know youe zip code so that we can estimate a UPS fee.

        left side cover

If memory serves right the covers off a special wont work for a standard. correct me if i'm wrong though.

I need a left cover for my XS11 79 standard myself

The F IS a Standard. It's the SF that's the Special.

Ok your right. been looking at PC screens all day. it starts to mess with your eyes after awhile.

I could use that side cover too if your selling and mines a '79f too. I would be willing to pay what your asking and the COD shipping. The guy that owned the bike before didnt know you had to unlock that side and broke it off.

Hey, Jeff - using the photos in the link in my earlier post (for general shape, dimensions), you can rebuild the locking tab with some 1/8" thick plexiglas, a razor saw, and some good cyanoacrylate glue. I rebuilt one for SWMBO's 'H a few years back and it is still going strong..

Cuda, I have tried to e-mail you off list, but without response. I don't know if you are receiving or not.
I still have that cover. Let me know if you still have a need.
                          Thx,

                              side cover tip

Having lost a few side covers over the years, I have come up with a trick to hang on to them. Very simple trick. I just drill a small hole in the top where it does not show and use a zip tie through the hole and around the adjacent frame tube. Now it may come off but it can't fall.
