  • Carb cleaning worked well!

Got my 80 SG back on the road after cleaning the carbs. Initially, #2 carb was dumping gas back into the aircleaner, but a good rapping on the carb bowl and the carbs in general unstuck whatever had hung up and she's running strong!

I left the jets stock (#110 mains, etc) but ended up with the airscrews at 2.5turns after a few rides, and she barely needs half "choke" to get going even on a 40 degree morning. Now it runs smoother down low (wasn't that bad before, but noticeable improvement) and pulls a whole lot harder up top.

It was interesting when I cleaned the carbs there wasn't anything that looked bad in terms of needing cleaning, but overall there was a good accumulation of tiny debris flecks in the bottom of the 5 gallon bucket I cleaned everything in. As well, what I found most everywhere was a thin film that to the eye wasn't much, but to the rag showed it as black.

Next up is to get the fuel system working right. It still goes about 65 miles (starting with tank full) and starves like it's running out of gas. I have to turn to "prime" to keep her running. Gas mileage is unaffected, at 36 mpg in the couple hundred miles I've run so far.

Not sure if it's something in the tank (fuel screens on petcocks) that is the problem or if it's the diaphragm. Doesn't make sense that it's the diaphragm because I would think it'd start starving right away if that wasn't working right. I thought of ditching the octy, but want to keep it as stock as possible, until I have no other option of things to try.

Any more thoughts on the fuel issue are appreciated in advance!

BTW, ZRX carbs have the same spacing as the XS11... http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35462

    sounds like

It sounds like your gas cap isn't venting and there isn't enough air in there with a full tank. Just my $.02

I agree with Radiation...could be a venting issue...but that black residue you wiped off of your carbs...well, you could have some goo on the petcock filters (if they are even there). those screens are VERY fine, and doesnt take much to gum them up.....

Are you sure that after 65 miles you aren't hitting the reserve point? Both prime and reserve use the lower pickup, but prime bypasses the fuel valve. If prime makes it run with out popping the gas cap, that would contraindicate a venting issue. Are you 100% sure you are pulling 36mpg and not 26?
        Ich habe dich nicht gefragt.
