  • 1979 SF Speedometer disassembly (Round 160 MPH)

My speedometer MPH gauge quit working and started making a whirring sound. The odometer continues to work. I removed the entire assembly from the bike and attempted the lubrication as documented in some of the prior threads on this topic, I also made sure the cable was lubricated and the wheel hub meter was correctly operating. I reinstalled the speedometer and checked its operation, same symptoms as before.

Following the disassembly procedure documented in older threads, I removed the faceplate from the speedometer. What a job!

I need advice on removing the trip knob, as it is stubborn as heck. I think the plastic knob assembly is pressed onto the metal shaft protruding from the main assembly. Therefore it should pull/pry off the unit, right? I need to get it off before I can pull out the guts of the main assembly and inspect it.

Question – does the plastic trip knob pull off the metal shaft?

I am under no illusions as to the ultimate success of a repair on this assembly. I consider a repair unlikely but worth the try. If nothing else I have some parts for future repairs.

This is a post by 3Phase on his spedo repair. His trip odometer nob turned off clockwise. His is a later model but I doubt they would have changed. Check the search button on the blue bar above for additional information. It will be your best friend.

        Hi brassica,
don't pull your knob, you naughty boy. You won't go blind but you will wreck the knob if you pull hard enough.
The tripmeter knob threads on with a LEFTHAND thread.
Screw it on to screw it off.
It's also been on there for three decades.
You may need to reach in somehow to grip the inner shaft to start it turning.

          Disassembly & cleaning completed

Thanks for the advice and reference, knob came off easily once I gripped it and turned in the correct direction.

It cleaned up and seems to be working, will need to verify calibration once it is all put back together.

Yeh, I broke my knob pulling on it! Wish I would have twisted it.
