Removing biased braking. Anyone done this?

I have the 82 XJ. I also have a 2007 FZ1 that I have been riding for the last couple of years. I took the Maxim for its first long ride yesterday, and admittedly it scared me a couple of times when coming to a stop because I am heavily front braked biased myself. A few times I thought the front brake had failed, then I would remember to use more back brake and it would come to a stop like it should. Maybe it will take time to get use to it, but right now I think I would like to have the front brakes seperate from the back. Looking at the master cyclinder on the front, it looks like it would be to small to handle both front calibres. Im just curious if anyone has changed over to unbias braking system and what changes they had to do to make it work properly. Thanks.

I did this to my XJ, it was easy. I used the front brake lines from an XS1100, but I plan on switching to a double banjo bolt at the master cylinder with braided steel lines on the front. No need to change the front master, just the rear. Use an XS1100 rear master cylinder and your good to go.

Use stainless lines in the front that don't flex like the old rubber lines, and use your XJ master cylinder. No need to change either one. If you take off the rear master cylinder and plug where the line goes to the front with a screw and teflon tape, then remove the proportion valve, you are left with a hole that a 10mm compression fitting will screw right into for a stainless line going to the rear caliper.

To be honest, all I have working is the rear brake and the front right brake. I plan on getting the front left working at some point, but since I can lock up the front just fine with one.. I just haven't been in any hurry to get the other one rigged up.

Maybe there is something wrong with my front brake!?! When I crank on the level the bike only slows, I really have to use the back brake pedal if I'm serious about stopping. There is no way it will lock the front wheel. Is there somewhere one can buy prefabed stainless lines for the front, or do they have to be custom made?

I have the split system on mine and and like it. The front lever will lock that puppy up. I bought ss lines but can't remember where I bought them. The lines and ends were seperate, just screwed together.

As stated.. just running the one front brake with the rubber line, my bike stopped well, but I couldn't make it skid on dry pavement. I changed that rubber line with a stainless line, and now locking it up wouldn't be a problem. A bit TOO touchy with gravel on the surface actually...






You'll need to re-learn your brakes after you get the SS lines. There's that much of a difference.

Lots of places to get them from. There are a few sources on ebay. Just do a search on here, and you'll find several preferred vendors. helusa.com is one possibility, though they are a bit pricey. They make colored ones, which got my attention.

Well.. there was a fluid change?? Out with the old and in with the new! Blood letting used to be a legit medical practice! lol.

Had nothing to do with ATF though, unfortunately. Kat says that when you are digging gravel out of your arm with a pocket knife.. that when the blade scrapes on the gravel.. it sounds just about like nails on a chalkboard.. I had owned that shirt for somewhere around an hour..

As far as where to find the lines... If you have a local bike shop, give them a try. That's where I got mine.
