  • stupid question of the day

OK so I need my carbs synched. That is a given. When in nuetral if I start the bike and rev throttle. sounds good and returns to idle failey quickly.

Now comes the stupid question. If a drop throttle once or twice the tach goes to about 4500-5500- If I rev above this it chokes and wants to die. Is this a synch issue? I know there is really no reason to ever have it in nuetral and rev so high. However it caught my eye and peeked my curiosity. These aren't like a car with a rev limiter. Is something wrong or is it just a synch issue? Just trying to get ahead of the game for when Doug comes to Synch it for me.

    clean carbs?

    Hi,

It sounds as if the main jets /passages are clogged with something. If its been sitting quite a while, the carbs no doubt need the full cleanout routine . Just search for the info here and you will find it.

Mine acted very similar, and I had done a thorough triple cleaning, too. Synch was the problem... but it took a few times trying to synch to get it right... found out in the end, air screw adjustments on each carb prior to synching is critical! Couldn't get my idle speed set consistantly to save my life... until we 'ear-tuned' each carb first, watching the vacuum gage until we achieved it's highest reading, then synched everything up w/ carb 3 reading. This cured my idle speed woes, once and for all! Works perfectly every time now.
Learned that low vacuum readings (wrong air screw adjustment) will trash a synch, no matter how accurately you match 'em to carb 3 readings... ESPECIALLY on an XJ... that has the electronic advance controls. High vacuum's the key to a proper synch, and that comes from proper air screw adjustments PRIOR to the synch.
W/o this, her idle will jump all over the place like she's possessed...
no matter how many times you reset the idle speed!
Hope you get her idle to behaving, and that this'll help ya.
It was the trick we figured out... FINALLY!

        just to be nit picky

The pilot screw is both fuel and air.
Been best for me to set them at 1 1/4 turns out after a cleaning then a synk before adjusting them, with another synk after there adjusted...

          Just a thought,

Is she not maybe under fuel starvation when revving so high?. Could be a wrong float setting.........

            tricks mostly...

            just to stir an arguement..

            i'm running stock, except mufflers.

my pilot screw setting is 3.5 turns out.

why? I don't know, that's just where the engine told me to set it.
i tune mostly by ear and sync gauges.

i've run it all summer that way. The needles are set in the middle position.
            (maybe i should raise'em 1 notch?)

anyway... the point is tuning is a learned art form, it can be done diferent way's but the end result is a smooth running beast.

Many times it's a great help to study an XSpert and learn everything you can from a more XSperienced seasoned rider. (No, not me).

            Good luck!
there's a steadily decreasing number of people who can tune carb's.
all the new sh$* is fuel injection.. it's a dieing art form.....

Been down that road many times, I always end up going back to the center clip position.
