  • Driveshaft vs Chaindrive Slack

After viewing the thread with the link showing a guy who lost the fingertips of his right hand while lubing his drivechain, I looked at my driveshaft with renewed appreciation.

Most of my riding has been on bikes with chain drive. The "clean it/lube it/adjust it" was part of the quarterly maintenance. In particular, I usually knew that I had to adjust the chain slack when I would feel that lag/lurch between gassing on and off in the straights. I considered that lurch to be dangerous when going round a corner so mostly I either coasted through the turn or tried to keep a constant acceleration.

So yesterday I checked the "slack/slop" in the rear wheel by putting it in gear on the center stand and rotating it back and forth. I measured 2 and 1/8 inches at the tire treadmarks between the hard stops. I know that this slack is the combined slack from the final drive, middle drive, and transmission. But I was expecting the combined movement to be less than what I got. I mean if I got this on a chaindrive then I'd get out the tools.

The bike has 14.5 K on the odometer and no performance problems or unnatural noises coming from anywhere. I'm just reporting what I see and wondering how that compares to what other owners have found.

That's what my XJ1100 measures out to (2 1/8") at the center of the tread with a little over 17K on the odometer.

      Baseline

      Thanks Yahman!

I'll keep this as a baseline for each 10K checkup.
