  • Reclaimed 18 yrs later

18 years ago I put my 79 SF in an old shed behind my father's house and was never able to get back to it. Marriage, kids, career, building a house etc. anyway I went and picked it up last weekend. Looks rough on the outside. Coon and mice poop have rusted through the fenders. I pulled the exhaust and only have one small hole on the left side near the rear foot peg. Drained the oil and although black, it still had viscosity and no sign of moisture. Pulled the carbs and breather assy off . The breather is full of mold and the carbs need to be redone. Put a battery charger on the battery leads and I got all the lights showing, so the mice left the wiring harness alone. Put the kick start on it after I pulled the plugs and it rolled over by hand slick as you please. I almost pee'd my pants. Now that I know she's not seized up I'll start stripping it out of the frame this winter. Any tips on what to clean the outside of the engine with. Also anyone have any experience with the MAL 2 motorcycle jack. Looking at getting one as I too am 18 years older . What about stuff like , gaskets , filters , carb kits etc. Can you still get this stuff from a dealer?

georgefix on ebay is who I get most of my gas and brake parts from. Plan on petcock rebuild kits, carb kits, and brake rebuild kits. You MAY get away with just the master cyl. rebuild kits on the brakes, but it's up to you. His carb kits seem to work very well for me. I've done an '80, as well as two '79 carb sets with his kits. I've been VERY happy with the results, and the service from him. JMHO
The gasket sets, are also available from ebay, oil filters from almost any good auto parts store, and air filter from K&N. /Watch the electrical connections! If you start to notice things just "falling apart", think about new connectors. Geezer, from here AND oregonmotorcycleparts.com, can get most of the connectors AND the proper crimp tool at a reasonable price. He also makes the BEST replacement regulator/rectifier for these and most other older jap bikes!

            Hi Mack and welcome,
if it were mine I'd fire the thing up again to see how it ran before I decided to tear the engine down.
OTOH, don't go riding on 18 year old tires, eh?
