Rear wheel dragging

On my '82 XJ1100...I thought it was the rear brake...turns out with the rear caliper off the wheel the rear still has something dragging it. My mechanic says he thinks it could be in the driveline or the rear bearing. Which one would be more likely to fail? The timing sucks as I am supposed to go to CT for a ST owners event...I had been riding it in this state for a while and am wondering if you all think I should ride it up there anyhow? If its the bearing could it fail catastrophically? I'm bummed

Rear Wheel Splines!!!

My mechanic called me back...rear wheel bearing is good as is the driveline...but the rear wheel splines were DRY...so some grease on 'em and all is good.
