  • new plug wires or swap coils...???

ok we have the big rally next weekend... my #3 wire zapped me the other night! i think they are old so i can buy new wires or take the coils off my xj and do away with my resistor.

i did a search and couldn't find out if this was worth it or not. no time to get the mike's coils in and installed so i could just swap for now.

the xs coils have about 25,000 miles on them and the xj's only have about 12,000. plus they look alot better. my caps on the xs were pretty corroded as well i swapped the xj ones that look brand new already.

i thought it'd be a good temporary fix right?

The XJ coils will work fine on the 79XS with removal of the ballast. Plug the 2 wires that lead to the ballast together. BTW, the harness leads to the coils have different plugs, so you'll have to rig up some jumper wires to connect them. I'm running the XJ coils on my 79F and they work fine.

If you're doing the coil upgrade to the F anyway, you could cut those leads off the old coils and already have the bullet connectors on the one end that fit right into your harness. I kept mine from the old coils as part of the harness when I did the upgrade. HTH

        1978 E XS1100 purchased for =$600.00
crap load of time spent modifying it = Priceless
My bike has the XS motor but can't really call it XS11
(or at least it still looks like the XS motor)
it has about 50% of the frame left from the XS bike

Yamahan - The wires are pretty easy to change on the 78-80 style coils. I've gotten them out by just twisting them and pulling carefully on the wire (after removing the outer sheath). Cut a little slot in the tunnel with a dremel down relatively close to the pin where you can see the pin but it isn't completely uncovered. You want to be able to see the pin so you can tell when the new wires are on it, but leaving as much plastic around the pin as you can will give a more secure connection. A little WD-40 on the end of the new high tension wires will make them slip easily back into the tunnel and down onto the pin. Clean the WD off around the repair site with some acetone on a rag, and put some RTV over the holes. After it is fully cured put some duct tape over the repair, and put a large zip tie around the coil, and making contact with the high tension wires through the hole to hold the wires in place. The wires on the 81 style coils (3 ohm) are a genuine PITA to change. The wire that goes into the short tunnel is soldered in, and takes some very careful digging to uncover. My $.02.

I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

i might just swap to the xj and see if it runs good, and if so theni'll butcher the stock coils
