fuel shut off not off

ok i searched the discussions and i found alot where the petcock was causing problems

im trying to prep my bike to do the dremel of the 1st & 2nd in the xmsn, but the fuel wont shut off... i ran my bike turned off the fuel so i could get the fuel out of the carbs and know it was closed off for taking off the tank... but it didnt shut off... so is there some trick to take off a 3/4 full tank with out bathing the garage with out the petcock turning off?

Get a few of golf tees, and shove them up into a few short lengths of fuel line. Remove the lines from the petcocks, and quickly cover them with your finger. Replace your finger with the "tee'd off" fuel line pieces as quickly as you can (see the "reaction time" thread ). That will stop the fuel flow until you can take the tank off and dump the fuel out to a more suitable container while you replace the valves in the petcocks.

Get a helper, pinch the fuel line near the tank, pull the other end lose and clamp a bolt in the end of it.

While you have your tank off, drain the fuel into the mower or a can and fix the bloody petcocks.

Just unbolt the tank and lift it up. Pull the hoses off and lift up the tank quickly. Make sure to hold the lines going to the carbs because they will be full of fuel. Then drain them into a jar.

Not to insult your intelligence, but you do know that the tab on the valve goes toward the "OFF" marking on the plate, not away from it. It seems counter intuitive.

I use a couple of pairs of "hemostats" to pinch the fuel lines before I shove in those golf Tees.

Best I could do on that reaction test was "ambling armadillo."

If you are going to drain the tank do it outside in the clear air and on the ground. This arrangement minimizes the chance of static sparks and the vapors concentrating. The fumes are heavier than air....
