  • Tach shell removal

Does anyone know how to remove the guts from the Tach or Speedo shell on the Special (round)? I would think that you could unscrew the face but I tried this to no avail?

If you are talking about the backshell it has 2 nuts on it. If you are talking about the plastic back on the speedo after removing the backshell-- forget it. It has an aluminum ring formed to it that has to be cut. Don't ask me how i know, but it ain't worth S**t and is built to not be repairable. (got a project one you can have)

The front face trim is rolled over the back edge of the tach. So in order to go into it, you have to bend it back far enough to get the tach out of the trim. When you do this, it WILL distort the roundness unless you use a large hose clamp on the outside of the trim to keep it round. Not too tight or you'll crack the glass ... I have also cut slices into the back of that trim and bent each one up to get it out also. Make sure you get it cleaned up good before you put it back together.

I had one with a broken needle on the speedo. I opened it up and pulled it out the same way. Used a round tooth pick to replace it but it was a little light as it bounces between 45 & 55.

Also opened my tach up with the slices to free it up as it was stuck. Didn't get it completely clean before I sealed up tight and it fogged up a bit.

        That's what I thought!

Yep .. It's the backshell or rim. Guess I'd be better off trying to find another one. It's a shame because it is just the glass that is tarnished!

If you decide to try to fix it, fill with nitrogen or helium when reassembling and make sure it seals or it will fog up and really tic you off!

For some reason most of the ones (shell) I have seen are a cream colored plastic. Most likely ABS which does not like being repaired. Pry it and you break it #@@%$#&^.

                Tach

Think I'll just get another tach. Andreas says he has one in pretty good shape. Also seen an add in one of my magazines that says they repair tachs. Might give them a call.

Well I may be a day late again. But I can give you some advice and a simple tool you can use that will ease your ring right off. I call it a church key. But it's really for removing paint lids. Don't know where you can buy it but maybe you can find it at a paint shop or some place like that. Anyway heres a pic.

Anyway this is perfect for getting into your speedo or tach. All you have to do is place the curved end at the lip of the ring and pry and twist back. Work your way around. A little at a time. I can have one apart in 5 minutes. Then when you go to put your glass and lid back on. Just put them in place. Then I take a thick work rag. Fold it up. Place it on the ring/glass side. Then with pliers squeeze together. A little at a time and work your way back around. You'll have it back together in no time.

And as for the part about sealing it up. Forget it. They are not 100% sealed. The glass is really the only thing sealed and thats just really to keep water out of your speedo or tack.

I have used this tool on both specials and standard gauges. Works great! Once anyone who has tried to mess with this stuff use's this tool they will never use anything else.

                  Hope this helps.

I actually have 2 or 3 of the "Church Key's" in my tool box. I'll give it a try. Thanx

                      foreda:
                      Your more then welcome.

Once you get the hang of it. It will make life much easier for you. It has the perfect angle to get right at that lip and pry. Once you get that lip started you can use it to twist as you pry. After a time or two you'll be tearing one open in about 5 minutes. And your not busting your fingers or knuckles trying to use a flat blade screw driver and using words the neighbors can here. Anyways good luck. It will be a peace of cake when you get use to using it.
