I have a 82 xj1100. I have been having lots of trouble and have spent way more money on it than any sane person should have. I currently have it in the shop and had the carbs rebuilt. I was flooding out and gas was would pour out of the breather box and the oil and gas were some how mixing. Bring told it was a stuck needle valve, I let them rebuild the carbs, but it is still doping the same thing. They said I need to locate a set of carbs that mine were messed up. We can't seem to locate a set. I need some ideas and suggestions on what could be the problem. I am very frustrated.

Welcome to the forum.
First thing don't trust too many people in a bike shop to know anything about these bikes. Most of the people working down there were 3-4 years old when these were built. What is the basis of there declaration that your carbs are bad? There are very few that can't be fixed if you know what to do. This is the place to learn what to do. There are several parts suppliers that have the parts you need to get your carb running. Get your bike out of there before they charge you to death...
Second thing is you should go up to the XS/XJ Discussion forum and post this question there. More people will see it there. Help is everywhere.
If you post up there you will hear from several of the XJer's in no time.
My XJ is waiting in the background for me to "learn what to do".
Again, welcome. And don't get frustrated.

Could as simple as replacing the floats, sometimes they have cracks in them and can fill up with gas and sink, therefore, allowing the gas to keep flowing in the needle/seats. I rebuilt mine myself and went thru all the directions and guidance on here (in the maintence or repair section) and learned a lot! never took one apart before this, but all went well and bikes runs so much better.!
hang in there.Dave

BDW72,
Rodger & Dave are right... hang in there & post this in the "Discussions Forum." This forum is where folks go to buy or sell bikes.
I own an '82 XJ1100J myself, I've been through all kinds of carb issues, and have come through them to the other side with the help of buddies and fellow members, and info from this forum. You can do this... hang in there, and feel free to PM me or ask me any questions you got about your XJ.
Welcome to the forum, and don't get discouraged! You've arrived at Mecca and help is on the way.
Let me know what I can do to help.

I just rebuilt mine not to hard. I had two floats that had holes in them. The book said to set the float hight at 1.012 I think. I had a problem with the float doing it's job (stopping gas flow) I set them at 1.059 and it did the trick. This site is the best because you can find anything for maintenance, because someone has been there befor. good luck.79 XS11
