  • Vetter Weatherstripping replacement?

Has anyone ever replaced the weatherstripping on the lids of their Vetter bags/trunk? The rubber stuff looks like a "T" with an "O" on the bottom of it Kinda like this, l-O but all connected. The T slides in a groove around the trim on the covers. It slides out easily, but the O is rather squished. I'm just trying to find a source for a replacement.

If you find a replacement (I've been looking with no luck) please let me know, I've got a trunk lid and two saddlebags who's seals have seen better days. I'm about to try some door/window weatherstripping from home depot on the bag/trunk side to get them to seal.

BTW, if you catch the chrome guard at the bottom of the lid on something hard enough the mounting frame bends slightly and the pop rivets break off leaving the door hanging by the strap that keeps them from hanging on the hinges when open. DAMHIK. 1/4 x 3/8 pop rivets put them back on just fine, so now I know why they used pop rivets for the hinges, the rivet will let go before the hole rips out.

I did a lot of research for trim for my MNS. Forgot what all kinds they had, but I bought mine from JC Whitney. Have to mow right now but try to get you some links in an hour+.

        Hey Bug,

Can you post a few photos?? I've seen a LOT of different types of AUTO weatherstripping for windows/doors in a variety of shapes on JCW's site and in their paper catalog years ago when I was just browsing, you might want to start there, since that stuff IS designed for AUTO type use/exposure vs. Home Depot/Lowes door/window stuff! BTW I bought 50ft of the gold tank/fender trim. I have to refinish my Vetter also so I am in the same tree.

Already learned that one the hard way... Caught the leading edge on the inside edge of the wife's cage's front fender. Popped the door of the bag right off. It quickly occurred to me the reason for rivets instead of bolts! I need to buy a rivet gun so I can put the door back on the right way. For now, I have replaced the rivets on that door with bolts.

I'll definitely post here if I ever find a solutio for te weatherstripping though.

Vetter's site doesn't list the weatherstripping as an available item. In fact, the only lead I've dug up was for a company in Oregon called "Swanee & Co" that went out of business in the last 10 years or so. They used to make/sell the Pacifico stuff, and supported the Vetter products as well. Evidently, the owners retired and the building was demolished.

I saw that gold trim on a picture of your bike a while back. I may get some to replace mine eventually, but I still have all the original stuff, so I'm not too worried about that. The fairing trim is available through Vetter, but I want to figure out a way to turn it gold, along with all the other silver parts on the Vetter touring package. Once I do that, I'll get new trim and start playing "Midas"!

I'll go and take a picture of the weatherstripping in a bit.

                  Here's a cross-section of the weatherstripping. It's more of a "D" next to the "T", I guess. Like l-D

The flat part of the T is 0.13" wide.

The closest thing I've been able to find is way too big for this application.

                    There's this one

                    Or this one

What is needed is that last one, without the adhesive strip on the bottom, and in these dimensions:

It's kinda funny that a google search for Vetter Weatherstripping gives this thread as the first option... Anybody have any leads on where to find stuff like this? Even the Goldwing folks have no solutions. Their threads look as empty as this one...

I know I asked this before, and you said the site had nothing, but have you emailed craig vetter? It's possible he might know more, or that he might look for a solution if someone asks. I keep meaning to but then I keep forgetting.

I've read posts from others who have done exactly that, and Vetter's response is to use sticky-back weatherstripping for doors or windows. Nothing that slides into the groove like the original stuff.

That's what I was thinking of doing on mine, but on the bag/trunk body rather than on the door. Just to give the old stuff something to seal against now that it's somewhat flattened out. And maybe a little RTV in the gaps just to get a seal all the way around.

I emailed Vetter, basically telling him what I was trying to do, and asking if they knew of a supplier for the stuff, and this was the reply (which came very quickly, I might add ):

We don't have any but it is looking like we need to repo the stuff.
