CO2 in Tire

I found a CO2 cartridge device for filling tires the other day. I think my kid had it for his bicycle. I checked and it will fit on the rear stem.

Has anyone used these to fill a flat,(after plugging, of course)?
I wonder how many cartridges it would take to get rolling again.

Doesn't take up much room, and no messy goo to deal with later.

Obviously, I could test it, but if somebody already knows....

Never tried it on a bike, but I imagine they would take at LEAST 3 of them. I carry a pack of 5. I tried to use it on a car tire once... thinking it would take a good dozen for that. I've been looking for a really small 12v pump/compressor, but I still haven't seen any that are as small a setup as the CO2 cartridge setup.

Don't those cartridges come included in the tire plug kits? I've never used them either, but I already have a 12v compressor/flashlight/caution light thingy that plugs into the lighter port on my fairing. It's about the size of one of my boots. I mainly use it at home for pumping up basket/soccer balls for the neighbor kids. The needle thing doesn't work so well in my regular compressor hose fitting (which I use for the neighbor kids' bike tires).

Well heck, Mickie!! I did NOT know that!! And here I've been wasting all my money on the canned whip cream!? Need to hang out in those book stores more I guess.. lol Just wondering though... do you tell SWMBO that you're headed to the library?

All seriousness, I hope one would use CO2 and not NOS in a tire as the NOS is obviously extremely flamable.

My local bike shop had a kit that came with one CO2 bottle for $12. It has a nozzle that screws onto your valve stem after you screw a cartridge into it.. then a trigger pull shoots the gas into the tire. Pretty nifty thing and I already had the stuff to put a plug in a tire, so that's all I needed. Walmart carries the CO2 cartridges cheap.

Just go to Walmart and buy a cheapo 12V air compressor. Open it up and take the guts out. Works like a charm, but watch your fingers!

no SWMBO, eh? "it is better to marry than to burn." Sez so in the Bible.
But I did wonder why they use nitrous injection in racecars if it don't burn so I checked Wikipedia.
Turns out that the stuff makes gas burn a lot better.
And also that they use NOS as the aerating agent in cans of whipped cream so that all of our little kinkies can happen together.

NOS isnt flammable

NOS increases the burn rate of anything combustable, It's like a super charge of oxygen into a fire, but it's not flammable on it's own. However if your going to put it in your tyres and be unfortunate to have an accident where flames are involved you could have some pretty serious issues.

Nitrogen is the way to go in tyres (and forks). Its inert so it doesnt increase in pressure when the tyres get hot, but it's not exactly portable, so roadside fills after repairs are pretty much out of the question.

That's what the dealers are filling the tires with nowadays. I saw big labels on the tires at my local Saturn dealer a while back, and kinda wondered how someone was supposed to re-fill their tires if they get low... I've never seen a "Free Nitrogen" sign at the corner gas station. Air works fine for me...

Sorry Brian, but this statement is WRONG. ANY gas WILL expand and increase pressure when heated. That is physics in action! Nitrogen works for race cars because of the heat they produce. On the everyday street tire, IF you keep them properly inflated, it makes NO DIFFERENCE! It DOES make the tire companies a BUNCH more money, though! Marketing can be an income monster some times!
