  • Need new rear brake setup...

I was wondering if anyone had changed to a more readily available rear brake system? I have NO pressure in my rear brake and I think it is because the brake reservoir is shot and has a leak in it. The cap is cracked at the screw holes and the plastic reservoir is cracked all along three of the four sides. I guess I will just ride it with just the front brakes for the time being, but I need to replace either the reservoir or the master cylinder/reservoir setup with something new...

Any ideas on repairing the cracked reservoir/cap, or replacing it CHEAP?

    Thanks,
    -Rick

    Hi Rick,
the easiest fix is to swap in a used replacement m/c & reservoir.
A smart guy would rebuild it before he installed it, eh?
The first person I'd contact for a used replacement would be our own Andreas Weiss.

I'm not using the M/C off of my 80 std. It came off of a runing bike but looks like it needs to be cleaned up. I'm going to be using a katana 750 setup so I'm not using the original. PM me if you'd like some info.

My rear one doesn't HAVE a "reservoir". It's all one piece, all metal. There is a plastic cap with a daphragm in it, but no plastic reservoir to break. Same for the front (except the cap is metal too). I guess they figured out the weakness of the plastic reservoir by '81.

I am pretty sure (someone with more knowledge, please chime in) that a stock 79 standard had a plastic reservoir for the front too. Mine has an aftermarket setup on the front, but the rear is still the crappy plastic. CBug, if I wanted to switch out rear brakes for one off an 81, like yours, would it be a straight swap? Are they set up the same with the piston going up into the master cylinder, and so forth?

            Thanks

All the rear MC's are the same bolt pattern (even the XJ's) but the internal bore for the LH and XJ are different from all the others, due to the linked brakes (rear MC runs left front caliper too). If you found a MC from any of the other models, they would definitely work. I have not researched availability of rebuild kits though.

Um, no. My 81 still has the plastic. You are one lucky dog.
