  • Tire Blew, Looking or new Metzler

Well after alot of years, The Rear Tire on my 78 Standard blew yesterday. It's Metzler, ME55A Metronic 130/90V 17.

I've been happy with the tire but can't seem to find it online. Any suggestions as to a source for this tire. Thanks in advance for your help.

Lots of these tires on the site. you may want to call and ask if they have your exact size

It looks like that tire was replaced by the Metzeler Lasertec Bias Sport Touring Rear Tire www.motorcycle-superstore.com has it shipped for $128 total.

First, I hope you weren't moving when it blew! If you were, I hope you weren't damaged!

Second, you say "alot of years". I hope that is an exaggeration. Remember that tires only last for a few years. Most say no more than 5, no matter how "good" they look. The rubber componds get stiff and start cracking after that point.

I'm with CatatonicBug wanting to know the rest of the story about the tire blowing. Mr. Murphy would never allow that to happen in your garage or driveway!
Lots of good tire opinins here. I mixed a radial metzler on back with a bias on front of my son-in-laws 84 v65 Sabre (which Metzler says is ok btw on their website) and it went from scarey squirrely to a japanese passenger train on rails. I wouldn't have believed the difference without experiencing it.
I've got a lasertec on the front of my special and it seems to be doing great. I really don't ride very hard though.
Tell us the rest of the story!

          Rest of the story.

Okay, yes it's been over 5 years and yes I should have changed them, I say them because the front is just as old.

The good news is there was no drama. Half Time in the Packer/Bear game and I needed some food. Ran a mile up the road to the Store. Started to back out of the parking spot. It rolled a lot tougher than usual. Figured a brake was sticking(yes, I was in denial). Remember the second half was about to start. After abut 10 feet going forward, I admitted to my self it was the rear tire. It was only flat on the bottom, so I rode home at 5 miles an hour and put it on the center stand. Now it's ready for a new tire.

Thanks for all the help. Tom

I got a spam from Bike Bandit today and it seems they're having a tire sale. I'm planning on a new ME880 for the front but I don't know if I'll get it now or wait until spring.

No the tire went flat because of what he had already consumed!! That and the HEAT in Vegas! I was there about three weeks ago, with the MNS! Spent Saturday and Sunday night at Harra's, and did a Sunday ride out to the Red Rock park.
Tires in your area NEED to be replaced after 4 years! The heat and UV radiation kills the rubber!

Speaking of old tires (or tyres for our British friends,) I bought some old stock 130/90/17" rear Avons and I expected to use them up by now but I still have 2 of them...

They have always been stored in the dark and they still seem to be soft and pliable. I'm probably going to install one on the back of my bike before spring but I'm just a little concerned. I bought some old stock Michelin M45's 25 years ago and they rode great, stuck well in corners and lasted about normal...

                    Tires

I am looking for a set of new tires. The ones I have now are 25 years old so I'm thinking maybe it's time to replace them. I have put many miles on a couple of sets of Continental Blitz tires. They were a sport-touring tire, got great mileage and still handled well. They were like night and day compared to the Mag Mopus tires that came on the bike. How could Yamaha have fitted those POS tires I'll never know. Anyway I am looking for a good set of tires with longevity and handling in mind. Continental no longer makes the blitz. Anybody have a good experience with a set of tires? I am not necessarily looking for the cheapest tire as this is not a place to scrimp.

Hey, great. Time for everyone's opinion on the best tires.

Sorry, but that is sort of a tired subject around here. There are plenty of threads concerning the same subject. Please just do a search.

LVTom got a pass since he was actually just looking for a source for a specific make of tire.

But since you asked, lots of members have had good luck with Avon, Metzler, Continental, Bridgestone, Chen Sheng, and Dunlops. (sorry if I missed any).

About the only ones that seem have a bad rap with everyone is the Dunlop 404. But I am sure there is someone out there that loves them.
