  • How should I paint the final drive?

I want to paint the final drive, but don't want to cover up the breather hole. I guess I don't quite understand how the breather works, and was wondering if someone could explain in a way that would pertain to problems I could run into, when painting the final drive. That was a run on sentance...English Guru's NEEDED!

    Thanks

Don't worry about it. The actual breather hole is way up under the cap. I can't imagine paint getting up there unless you're gonna DIP the whole drive in paint

I just painted one and I simply wrapped the breather piece with tape. For the rattlecan job I did on it, it turned out great.

I painted mine no problems. But if you're worried about the breather then I think DG's suggestion has it covered.(no pun intended)But please be careful on your choice of colors.

On my SF the breather is up under a little cone shaped cap. I just stuck a small piece of wood in the hole, painted everything the removed the wood with a little twist. That way the cap gets painted too.

About the type of paint. I used Duplicolor wheel paint. I used the Aluminum color but they also make a dark metallic grey that is nice. After the color coat I applied a coat or two of the Duplicolor clear coat for wheels. Dirt and road grime just wipes off and the finish is very chip resistant to small stuff the wheels might kick up.

            Painting Final Drive

First of all ..Paint. I use Dupli-Color wheel coating. It is a very hard paint and will resist chipping. The silver color looks almost like the original color. Use Aircraft stripper to strip the paint off, then ruff it up with a wire wheel brush. Then you can wipe it with carb cleaner to insure there is no grease. Prime with Dupli-Color primer, then paint. Put a wood dowel in the breather hole. I polish the breather to with a Dremel Tool and white rouge and it looks like chrome. Hope this helps.
