  • Exhaust Noise Emission

Hey everyone, it's been a while but I am SLOWLY but surely getting my 78 standard restoration bike put back together. Time and money have a way of governing my speed quite a bit. I'll get a link to some progress pictures posted soon!

Question: Did some 78 standards with the factory exhaust, have an information plate riveted to the bottom of each muffler, stating something like:

"this product is designed for use on pre-1982 model year motorcycles only and does not conform to U.S. EPA noise emission standards blah blah blah..."

Can anyone comment on that? My bike is all original and has no plates riveted to the mufflers. Was it only in certain states or something? Or a running change midway through 78 and to the later model years?

    Thanks!

I don't know definitively the answer to you're question, however I doubt any manufacturer would make reference to the future(i.e.-1982) on a product they currently sell.JAT

I think I remember something about the Yamaha factory replacement exhaust systems carrying this plate after a certain point. For example, if you scraped up your exhaust in say 1984 in an accident and went to Yamaha for a replacement set, this is what you would have received.

The plate was ONLY used on replacement exhaust systems. The 1978 didn't have or need any plates, as the U.S. Laws didn't really apply to bikes then. If the mufflers you have are stamped with the 2H7-XXX part number on the top near the mount, they are stock.

OK that makes sense, thank you. I'm trying to keep my restoration as true to factory spec as possible. With that in mind, my current exhaust system is severely rotted out. Am I looking at a nearly impossible task of trying to acquire an original 78 standard exhaust system that is not severely rotted but in good enough condition to rechrome? I'm planning on rechroming anything I buy, I'm sure it will be neccessary just due to the age.

Good luck with rechroming an exhaust as most chrome shops will not do used exhaust systems because it's often too hard to get them clean enough to not contaminate the tanks with the carbon from the inside of the system. You may have to go for something like JetHot as it's a sprayed and baked system unlike chrome.

Not only that, but JetHot keeps more of the heat inside the exhaust and doesn't turn blue like chrome.

Interesting, I've never heard of JetHot but I'll certainly check it out. About the chrome, I've found a nice chrome shop for things like my shock springs and headlight ears. I asked him about the exhaust system and he didn't seem concerned. He has done other motorcycle exhaust systems he tells me but the bluing does scare me. My understanding is that the OEM exhaust is chromed (under perfect manufacturing conditions I realize) but if it is turning blue it is because it's running too hot? For a number of possible reasons. Is this true?

Generally because it running lean, which is of course an almost natural condition for these beasts. As a matter of fact, it's actually by design on the 80's and newer, but it's something you can fix, but I haven't seen one that didn't blue after a while anyways.

Yes, I've seen the set on ebay... very nice looking and they do have the emission information plate I mentioned so apparently the mufflers are a factory replacement, but I could at least use them for the right price, until I find the perfect stock system. I'll have to check out the system "jrbrts" is selling. Thanks for the lead!
